Hi everyone, my name is Brian. I live in San Jose with my beautiful wife and our amazing son. I currently teach film history at Mission (in Santa Clara) and West Valley College (in Saratoga). I work in the Older Adult Community Education program, which means that I get to teach senior-age citizens about the history of movies. It’s a very fun and rewarding job!

I am very passionate about multiple subjects, and even more passionate about teaching them to others. I think I am a good teacher and tutor because: (a). I have a lot of knowledge about subjects that I’m passionate about; (b). I love imparting that knowledge to others and helping them gain greater confidence in their ability to learn and achieve their academic goals; and (c). I have a talent for making difficult subjects easier to understand by using simple words and real-life examples, and I am very patient with students who are struggling to learn. I would love to have an opportunity to tutor anyone who thinks that I can help them, and I promise that I will do everything that I can to meet your needs and help you not only learn, but gain greater confidence than ever in tackling whatever subject is challenging you.

I have an MBA and an accounting certificate, and I have had several accounting jobs. I understand very well the basics of accounting and I have had success in tutoring others and helping them understand it better through some simple techniques.

I am a passionate history buff, especially in American history, and I love sharing my knowledge with others and teaching them about the important historical events that make us what we are today. I am also a film buff, and besides my current job as a film teacher, I got my Bachelor’s Degree in Radio-TV-Film-Theatre, and I have a lot of experience acting in stage plays and musicals. I have a passion for the entertainment arts, and a great knowledge of the history and performance techniques in the world of theatre and film.

Well, that’s me in a nutshell! If you think I can help you, please contact me so

Approved Subjects

American History

American History

I have always LOVED history, and indeed I teach it regularly as part of my film history teaching job which I have had for over five years! I always got A’s in my history classes and studied the material not just because I had to but because I enjoyed it too! To this day I regularly read about and watch documentaries on various historical subjects, especially American history; I am passionate about learning more and teaching others about all the different cultures and people who have contributed to making the United States of America what it is today, with all its virtues and faults.
Business

Business

I recently got an MBA with an emphasis on public administration. I know a lot about the basic workings of business administration through my education and experience working in different industries. I also have leadership experience in my church that has taught me a lot about making important decisions that help an organization succeed in its goals.
Drums

Drums

For years I studied drumming with a private instructor. I also played in a band in junior high/middle school and we performed a concert with me on the drums! I know how to read drum music and how to play with real rhythm and feeling.
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

I always got great grades (either As or Bs) in my math classes. I passed the Wyzant math test, and I have accounting experience and education, which definitely requires math skills! My father was an engineer, and I think I have inherited his "math brain" (that's probably not an "official" qualification, but nevertheless I think it's important for others to think about!).
English

English

I always got A’s in my English classes; I am excellent at grammar and spelling and have read a lot of books, including many of the great novels, poems and plays in our world’s history. I can’t remember even one time that I had to correct a misspelled word or rephrase a poorly constructed sentence in any of my classes or jobs; in fact English as a whole has always been one of my strongest subjects.
Film

Film

Besides getting my Bachelor's Degree in Film from San Jose State University, I have been teaching film history for over four years at Mission and West Valley College. I am a film buff with a great passion for movies, particularly their history, and I love them so much that I spend even a good deal of leisure time reading about them (and watching them, of course!). I have a great knowledge of film history and theory and a good deal of knowledge about the technical aspects as well; we had to learn all these things in my college classes! But learning them was a lot of fun for me. :)
Financial Accounting

Financial Accounting

I have four years of practical accounting experience in the workplace, a certificate in accounting, and I have taken several accounting courses on my way to getting my business degree. I also have experience tutoring students and helping them better understand accounting and get better grades in their accounting classes. I have discovered ways of making accounting easier to understand for those whom I teach, increasing their confidence and success in accounting.
Literature

Literature

I have read many of the greatest books of all time, and even for those I haven’t read I often know a lot about them because I have studied a lot about literature. I almost always got A’s on book reports, and I have helped various family members and friends over the years to understand literature better and appreciate it a lot more, on one occasion even helping a friend to get a better grade on a book report. I am fascinated with learning more about the greater meaning and significance of so many great works of literature, and I love sharing that knowledge and passion with others.
Music History

Music History

I am as much a music buff as film buff, especially when it comes to classic popular music of the twentieth century; I have studied a lot on the subject. I also deejayed for a jazz music show on college radio, and I worked for a music store for many years as the resident "music expert", selling lots of CDs through helping people with my music knowledge. I also play the drums!
Public Speaking

Public Speaking

I have a lot of experience with various forms of public speaking, from giving spiritual talks in church to teaching film history at my current job to acting on stage in plays and musicals to deejaying a jazz music show on college radio. I used to be scared and struggle with it, but I have gotten more courageous and rather good at it. I understand what it's like to be scared and "stumble" when speaking in public, but I have figured out ways to overcome those struggles that I can teach to others.
Reading

Reading

I always got great grades (As or Bs) for reading assignments in my English classes, including book reports. I always loved reading both fiction and non-fiction, and I am a nearly-perfect speller. I passed the Wyzant reading test as well. Through reading I have learned the meanings of many words, learned a lot about the world we live in, and familiarized myself with many of the all-time greatest books, poems, plays and other written works.
Spelling

Spelling

I have always been good with the English language and I am a great speller. I can’t recall ever getting less points on a school assignment because I misspelled a word! My ability to spell correctly has also come in handy in work situations. I have read many books and I am a visual learner; because I remember exactly what words look like on a page, I can also remember how to spell them. I know very well the basic spelling rules but I am also aware of the numerous times that certain English words don’t follow those rules.
Theater

Theater

Besides getting my Bachelor's from San Jose State University in Theater, I have acted in stage plays and musicals for over twenty years now at high school, college and community theatres. I have a great passion and love for performing and I read about the theater even in my leisure time. I have great knowledge of the history of the theater and of acting and performing techniques, as well as other technical aspects of producing a stage show.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

As someone who has read a lot of books and gotten A’s in a lot of English classes, I have always taken it upon myself to learn the meanings and correct spellings of many words. I have often helped my niece and my brother with learning the meanings of words that they had to learn for their science classes, and I know that I helped them to get better grades. I love learning about the meaning and origin of different words and I know enough that I can understand almost anything I read that is written in proper English!
Writing

Writing

I have many years of experience writing multiple papers in school. No matter what the subject matter was, whether it was grade school or college, whether it was an English class or one of my undergraduate film classes or one of my graduate business classes, I always got As or Bs, usually As, on my papers. I passed the Wyzant writing test and I once wrote a paper that my 100W professor used as an example of an ideal final paper for his students.

Brian made learning fun!

Brian W. was my Accounting Tutor, and I explained to him about my Learning Disability, and he was patient and understanding of my learning style. He took the time to explain the lesson if I did not understand, which made learning fun. I would recommend him to any of my classmates.
