About CHRISTOPHER

I have five years' experience of teaching English language and literature, and two years' experience of teaching Biblical Studies, as well as fifteen years' experience of teaching the Christian faith in informal settings. I hold the following degrees: a Bachelor of Arts in English and Biblical Studies, a Bachelor of Theology in Systematic Theology and Ecclesiastical History, a post-graduate Higher Diploma in Education (Secondary School teaching), a Bachelor of Theology (Honours), and a Master of Theology.

My focus in tutoring is to identify problems the student is experiencing and help him find the best solutions to these problems and consolidate skills in which he may need further insight and development, with the goal of improved knowledge, insight and performance in those areas which he finds problematic.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

My extensive background in teaching English language and literature qualifies me for this. I have also studied a number of practice tests in ACT English. My major subject for my B.A. degree was English.

ACT Reading

My background in English teaching included teaching students how to read and comprehend various passages from different types of writing. I have set exams in comprehension skills of equivalent difficulty to ACT Reading tests. My study of English as a major subject in my B.A. degree gave me a great deal of experience in learning to read, comprehend and teach different types of literature.

Bible Studies

Biblical Studies (including Old Testament Studies and New Testament Studies) was a major in my Bachelor of Arts degree. I had to take three one-year courses in Biblical Studies. Also in Seminary, I had to take additional courses in Biblical Studies. I also studied Greek I & II (Hellenistic Greek) to be able to read the New Testament in its original language. I taught Biblical Studies at the high school level in Namibia for two years. As a pastor I have had eighteen years' experience of teaching the Bible in various contexts.

English

My three year major subject in my B.A. degree was English (Language and Literature). One year was devoted to language study and three years to the study of English Literature in various periods. I have five years' experience in teaching English at high school level.

ESL/ESOL

I have five years of experience teaching English as a second language to high school children, and one year of giving tuition in it at adult level. My interaction with second language English speakers from nations such as Namibia and South Africa have refined this skill. I also served as an English Second Language Sub-Examiner in South Africa.

Grammar

My extensive schooling in English grammar at primary and high school level, including clause analysis, gave me a very good initial foundation in English grammar. The English Teaching Method courses I took during studies for a Higher Diploma in Education (South Africa) reinforced this foundation. Five years of English teaching experience at high school level were helpful to me in passing on the knowledge of correct grammar to students so as to assist them in developing their speaking and writing skills.

Latin

I studied Latin for seven years in middle and high school. Then I took a one year course in Theological Latin through the University of South Africa. Though I have not taught Latin, I used my reading knowledge of Latin in my post-graduate studies of the writings of St. Augustine of Hippo to read some of his works in the original Latin. Today, I maintain a reading knowledge of Latin.

Literature

I am qualified to teach English Literature because Literature constituted most of my reading for English as a major subject for my B.A. degree. Not only did these studies furnish me with an understanding of the diversity of Literature, but they also imparted the knowledge of how to read and interpret it. My five years' experience of English teaching included the teaching of novels, poems and plays, especially Shakespeare's plays, to high school students.

Proofreading

Proofreading is not only a necessary part of English Composition or Writing I taught for five years, but it is a skill which I have used throughout my life. My work as a minister of religion for twenty-one years has involved proofreading of service bulletins, newsletters, letters, sermons, articles, lectures and lessons. In addition, I wrote a thesis for my Master of Theology degree, and this necessitated proofreading.

Reading

For most of my life, I have been an avid reader. My reading skills were honed during my studies of English Literature for my B.A. degree. During my five years of English teaching experience, I taught many students to improve their reading and comprehension skills. I used vocabulary building exercises and exposed them to many different passages and questions testing their comprehension levels.

SAT Writing

Teaching advanced writing skills have been part of my focus, especially for mother-tongue speakers of English. During at least three of my five years of teaching English, I have taught English as First Language. I even gave extra lessons to some students to enhance their advanced writing skills, and their competence improved with my tuition.

Vocabulary

Throughout my life, I have improved my own vocabulary through copious reading and using words that I learn. My studies of English literature as well as my extensive reading of Charles Dickens's novels during my high school years assisted me in this regard. My English teaching over five years has included regular vocabulary building exercises, spelling tests, and the explanation of the meanings of difficult words, as well as lessons on how to use a dictionary.

Writing

My teaching of writing has included the teaching of correct grammar, syntax, spelling, composition of various types of writing, and proofreading. One of my emphases has been on the benefit of exposure to great works of literature for the development of writing skills. In five years of English teaching, I have regularly taught the importance of creative but correct forms of expression in writing.
