New discoveries in science open up the universe and find cures for diseases. Hi-tech communication puts the world at our finger tips. We just have to learn to discover our world and the people in it. And we cannot blindly accept what is offered to us. Knowledge in different areas helps us to be critical thinkers. Speaking German and English (ESL) help us to understand people from around the world and their cultures.

Germany plays an important role in the world of politics and in our global economy. Many Germans speak English. But it so much better if the foreign traveler or business woman can speak and understand the native language when visiting Germany. Nelson Mandela says it best: "If you talk to a man in a language he understands that goes to his head; if you speak to a man in his language that goes to his heart. However, it is also important to speak fluently English, no matter where one lives. English is the language that people around the world learn so that can be truly a member of our global community.

Learning German is not difficult. Learning a new language is fun and lets you appreciate your native language.

I have been working in the last year with children K-6. I worked with a 2nd grader on her reading and writing skills. She improved by 3 points (not sure how her school was rating her). I am working with a nonprofit and volunteering at our local elementary school. I am also working with my 2nd grade grand-daughter and her cousin on reading and writing.

Reading: In order to understand what you have read you need to know the vocabulary. Who is the intended reader? What is the tone of the piece? Is there irony? Is this writing to entertain you or are you to learn from it? What is the author’s style? Does he use symbolism, alliteration or figurative language like metaphors and similes? Does she use satire or foreshadowing? What is the setting? Who are the characters? The more you read, the more you will like to read, and the better you will get. You will become a critical thinker and you will have something to say. Then you can write. You will brain-storm, write an outline and then your essay (or a poem or a speech). You will use specific examples to support your hypothesis. Listening and understanding and taking notes are often part of English. Have you learned to focus on what is being said? When you watch a video or a movie or when you listen to a speech, can you also take notes and then write afterwards about what you have heard? It all takes practice: reading, writing, listening, and comprehension.

I was an English learner myself. I studied hard, looked up all the words I did not know, listened to English broadcasts and started to interact with people who spoke English. It all worked out very well. I became an English teacher myself with a Bachelor's Degree in English and French, a Master's Degree in German and a Secondary Teaching Credential. Education is my passion and languages are my specialty. I believe it is very important to speak clearly and as grammatically correct as possible. It is also important to sometimes retrain your brain so that you can pronounce all the letters and syllables in the English language. You probably will never lose your accent, but that accent did not prevent Henry Kissinger (German), Arnold Schwarzenegger (German) and Arianna Huffington (Greek) to become successful in the United States.

I studied French for four years in Germany and then continued here in California, majoring in French at San Jose State University, where I received my B. A. as well as a Secondary Teaching Credential. I can help you with grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, reading and writing. Le français, ce n'est pas trop difficile.

I got my Master's Degree in German and my Secondary Teaching Credential from San Jose State University. I keep up with current German culture and language via Deutsche Welle (dw.de = German TV channel). I am passionate about teaching, especially German.

Just as you have to know how to write a good essay, you have to know how to prepare your speech. You need an interesting introduction, a body, and a conclusion. You have to involve your audience. And you have to practice!

I have a B.A. with a minor in English. I a have Secondary Teacher's Credential. I am an English learner myself and I had to take the TOEFL test before being admitted to San Jose State University. In order to pass this test, you have to know the English language, especially grammar and vocabulary. These are skills that can be learned. I would suggest that it is very helpful to immerse yourself into the English language. You should watch English language TV programs and listen to radio programs that are broadcasted in English. You should read English newspapers and books. You should surround yourself with English speaking family members and friends. Then you will have no problem with the English language and with the TOEFL test.

Vocabulary

I am an English learner. Almost every word I know I learned from a book or from a teacher. After many years and multiple degrees I still learn new words, words like cogent, dichotomy, and obfuscate. People use these words in newspaper columns and on TV talk shows. I will hear new words, I will look them up, and I will continue to learn new words. It never ends, but it helps me to grow.
Writing

In order to write well, it is important that you have something to say. Maybe you have to write a book report or an essay on specific subject. If you are younger your topic might be: “What I did Last Summer”. When you are older you might want to write about topics, such as “Should Drugs be Legalized?” or “The Electric Grid”. No matter at what level you are, you should write concisely. You should use correct grammar and spelling. There will be times when you have to research your subject. When you use a computer, the Word program includes the MLA (Modern Language Association) style, which will help you to format your text. When you write your paper by hand, you need to know how to use foot notes, if applicable. After you have written your essay (or your poem) you should be proud of your work and of yourself.
