My name is Jimmy and I'm looking forward to working with you.

For my education I went to UC Berkeley with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences (essentially Computer Science). I ended with a GPA of 3.69. I've worked as a Software Engineer for 5 years at Meta and 1 year at Google. In present day, I am a coding instructor at Code Ninjas - details below.

In addition to 6+ years of technical industry experience at Meta and Google, I've got about as much tutoring experience as well. For 2 years, I've done one on one tutoring on sites similar to Wyzant. For 2 years, I've taught as a TA / Student Instructor at UC Berkeley for the Data Structures and Algorithms Course, leading discussion and lab classes as well as holding office hours, all weekly. I was a long term member (3 years) as well as the president of an honor society HKN where I held additional general office hours for all CS and Engineering courses I've taken. Starting March 2025, I'm currently working part time (17.5 hrs / week) at Code Ninjas, where I guide K-12 students through a coding curriculum. I've worked with students from Kindergarten to College, though I am open to working with students of all ages.

My general approach is empathy based. I know what it's like first hand to struggle with new concepts, especially at a young age. I have the compassion to seek to understand where the student is struggling. I have the patience to revisit concepts not yet mastered. I'll keep us on track, but if I sense the need for a short break, I will suggest one. A student's mental health comes before their academic success is my policy, so I will have to turn you away if our philosophies differ here. But rest assured, I am not laid back. I will do what I can to excite students about the material they are learning, and motivate them to keep learning and growing.

I respond within 24 hours, usually within 12.

Approved Subjects

Computer Programming

Computer Programming

I graduated at UC Berkeley with a Computer Science B.S., where I also took a paid role as a Student Instructor for CS 61B - Data Structures and Algorithms. I was a software engineer at Meta and Google for 6+ years. I am actively a coding instructor at Code Ninjas teaching various coding languages for students K-12 for over 1 year.

Data Structures

Data Structures

I graduated at UC Berkeley with a Computer Science B.S., where I also took a paid role as a Student Instructor for CS 61B - Data Structures and Algorithms for 2+ years. Additionally, I have done extensive studying for coding interviews, which requires a strong background in Data Structures.
Java

Java

I graduated at UC Berkeley with a Computer Science B.S., where I also took a paid role as a Student Instructor for CS 61B - Data Structures and Algorithms for 2+ years. This course taught in Java and had zero Java experience expected at the start.
Python

Python

I graduated at UC Berkeley with a Computer Science B.S., where I also took a paid role as a staff for CS 61A - Intro to Programming. Additionally, I have done extensive studying for coding interviews, which I heavily coded in Python, so it is fairly internalized. Coding language is fairly interchangeable, and in my opinion, Python is the quickest to pick up. Beyond that, the skills you carry will transfer to all other coding languages.
Swift

Swift

I have strong experience in the big 3 iOS Coding Languages: Swift, SwiftUI, and Objective-C from my 6 years of Software Engineering and time spent studying for interviews. I have made personal projects in Swift. And on top of coding language proficiency, I also am familiar with System Design and Architecture.
