I have been tutoring since I was in middle school and our guidance counsellor asked me to help a peer understand fractions. I tutored and taught in various capacities throughout high school and my Bachelor degree in chemistry. In graduate school I loved my time as a teaching assistant as realized that explaining things was my great joy. I completed my doctoral work in computational chemistry at McMaster University where I focussed on bridging high level quantum descriptions with simple understandings of structure and bonding. During this time I was fortunate to be able to discuss chemical education with Ron Gillespie, the father of VSEPR theory, and begin my career as a university lecturer.
After 10 years lecturing - mostly freshman chemistry - at Canadian universities I returned to school for my Bachelor's of Education. I am credentialed to teach middle and high school math and chemistry and have an additional credential in special education. I have been enjoying short and long term substitute teaching at local high schools, first in Canada and then, for the past several years here in San Jose. My neighbourhood is Willow Glen but I am willing to travel to surrounding areas, or meet online.
I am always most fulfilled when I can work one on one with learners to get to their Aha! moments. I believe that you can learn this and we will figure out what works for you.

Approved Subjects

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I am a Credentialed math teacher at the middle and high school level in Canada. I have taught a semester of geometry as a long term substitute here in California. My PhD is in computational chemistry and contains a surprising amount of multivariate calculus. Algebra 1 is the stepping stone to high school mathematics and I believe everyone should be able to understand the basic principles in this course. I use various approaches, including lots of visuals to help make math meaningful and thereby do-able.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

I am a credentialed math and chemistry teacher in Canada and have taught and volunteered in high school math classrooms here in California, including Algebra 2 classrooms.
Chemistry

Chemistry

I have been teaching chemistry at the university level since 1999 and got a BEd with credentials for high school math and chemistry (in Canada) in 2011. I have taught general/introductory chemistry at many levels in both Canada and California. My approach is to help students understand what questions they need to ask themselves as they are solving a problem.
Thermodynamics

Thermodynamics

I have a PhD in physical chemistry and have 15 years of university teaching experience. This includes about 5 years of working as a teaching assistant for physical chemistry courses (thermodynamics and kinetics), and 10 years as a university lecturer for courses including general chemistry and physical chemistry (thermodynamics). I earned a teaching degree in 2011 and have both Canadian and American experience as a high school math and chemistry teacher, along with extensive experience as a personal tutor.
