I have been tutoring since I was in middle school and our guidance counsellor asked me to help a peer understand fractions. I tutored and taught in various capacities throughout high school and my Bachelor degree in chemistry. In graduate school I loved my time as a teaching assistant as realized that explaining things was my great joy. I completed my doctoral work in computational chemistry at McMaster University where I focussed on bridging high level quantum descriptions with simple understandings of structure and bonding. During this time I was fortunate to be able to discuss chemical education with Ron Gillespie, the father of VSEPR theory, and begin my career as a university lecturer.
After 10 years lecturing - mostly freshman chemistry - at Canadian universities I returned to school for my Bachelor's of Education. I am credentialed to teach middle and high school math and chemistry and have an additional credential in special education. I have been enjoying short and long term substitute teaching at local high schools, first in Canada and then, for the past several years here in San Jose. My neighbourhood is Willow Glen but I am willing to travel to surrounding areas, or meet online.
I am always most fulfilled when I can work one on one with learners to get to their Aha! moments. I believe that you can learn this and we will figure out what works for you.
