Hi, and thank you for visiting my profile! I hold a BA in English (Cum Laude) from UC Berkeley and an MA in Philosophy from San Francisco State University. During graduate school, I taught Introduction to Logic courses to undergraduates. After graduation, I taught at an elite private middle school, where I taught courses in English, Humanities, and Logic. I then taught at a charter school, where I created differentiated reading groups based on reading levels and helped students steadily advance their reading levels using guided reading techniques. As a private tutor, I primarily teach reading comprehension, writing, and grammar to students within grades 3-12.
My approach is built around my Strategic Reading Method, which turns reading into clear, repeatable steps. These strategies can be applied to any text and help students follow the plot, understand the characters' personalities and perspectives, and think more critically about what they read. I pause their reading at key moments to ask guiding questions, prompting students to connect ideas and select the best evidence to support their answers. This technique not only builds comprehension, but also evidence-based critical thinking.
In writing, I help students craft essays and responses that are organized, supported by textual evidence, and demonstrate thoughtful analysis. By combining these reading and writing strategies, progress becomes measurable and achievable.
I also teach grammar, which builds a strong foundation for both reading and writing. My lessons go beyond just completing a worksheet; I help students internalize grammar concepts by having them provide evidence-based responses and by drawing connections to prior lessons.
