Hi, I'm Mahika! I'm a 3rd year at NYU studying Neuroscience, with a minor in Genetics & Bioinformatics, and Psychology. I am a multi-disciplinary student, which is why I love teaching both STEM and humanities! I grew up teaching my best friend math because she was intimidated by it. Teachers in the past had scared her into thinking it was something she couldn't do. I wanted to be the advocate for students like her, so that no subject seems too scary to approach! For two years, I was part of a program called Academic Leadership where we tutored underserved students and mentored them. Through this program, I learned methods of teaching that encouraged students and inspired them to take on challenging material. I believe in being supportive and giving students a strong foundation of understanding, so they are able to think critically as they move on to more advanced topics. After the program, I became a private tutor and loved being able to work with the feedback of students and parents in order to benefit the student as much as possible!
I will come prepared with lesson plans, practice activities, and create a schedule to optimize learning. I tailor my tutoring style based on the student's individual needs as well as the subject material. I have been tutoring Algebra 1 & 2 for three years now, and have experience teaching a wide range of math levels. In terms of the sciences, I have taught high school biology, AP Bio, Principles of Biology I & II, and Molecular and Cellular Biology at college, and can also teach middle school and elementary school biology. I have a lot of experience with the material, and it quickly became my favorite subject to teach. Since Biology is largely systems-based, creating diagrams with the student breaks the cellular process into small pieces that are easy to understand. Please contact me if you think I could be the right tutor for you. We can schedule lessons based on your availability and preferences. I am so excited to help you on your academic journey!
