Bio

I first started performing when I was 13 singing in a grunge band. Back then I loved metal music more than anything but when I was 16 I was introduced to Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan, and their music just blew my mind!

I then got deeply into Jazz music and have been studying this for years at schools in both Europe and the U.S. I have my bachelor of Jazz performance from Cornish College of The Arts in Seattle and my Masters in guitar performance from the Royal Academy of Music in Denmark and more than 15 years of experience teaching a variety of musical subjects such as theory, ear-training, ensemble, guitar, bass and ukulele.

I love everything about music and have a passion for helping others achieve their musical goals! I am patient, compassionate, positive and always willing to meet people at their level whilst inspiring them to aim for the highest.

I have studied Ear-Training formally through schools and courses since age 16 and I use my skills associated with Ear-Training extensively in my work as a musician and teacher. In my college years I studied Ear-Training and Integrated Skills under professor Margie Poss at Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle. I was rewarded a department scholarship and an award for excellent academic performance with a GPA of 3.9. Besides incorporating Ear-Training as part of a general curriculum for my students I have also taught traditional classroom lessons at High School level as well as tutored numerous music students for entry exams and auditions.

I am a musician with a Master's degree from the Royal Academy of Music in Denmark and I have studied guitar for more than 25 years while performing for almost as long. through the years I have played with ensembles ranging from rock/punk groups to Big Bands, pit musician for musicals, jazz combos and Reggae groups. I have performed at jazz festivals and music venues all over Europe and the U.S notably as guitarist with The Cassia DeMayo Quartet, The Sexican (Danish cult punk group) and 'The Doors Tribute' performing with original Doors Bassist Jerry Scheff. I have taught guitar, Bass, drums, Ear-Training, Music Theory, Rhythm Training, Jazz Improvisation and various band ensembles at numerous music schools since 2003 and I'm currently writing a book covering patterns and exercises for Jazz improvisation.

First lesson went well!

I learned how to tune and I feel Alex covered alot in the first 30 minutes! I liked how he compared the ukelele to the guitar. I am pleased. I look forward to my next lesson.

Incredibly Insightful Teacher!

I’ve been playing guitar for a little over 10 years and have hit a rut in my playing. I spent a long time trying to figure things out on my own with little to no success before I had my lesson with Alex O. After just listening to my musical background, knowledge and current ability, Alex provided me with insight almost immediately that did not occur to me before and immediately identified a weakness that I had which negatively impacted my ability to fully express myself on the guitar. I thoroughly enjoyed the lesson that I had with him and am looking forward to keeping the conversation going with him. Definitely recommend him if you’re looking for a guitar teacher!

Alex is an excellent guitar teacher. He is patient and takes time to explain the guitar notes and the guitar chords. I would highly recommend him as he takes his time to clearly explain the importance of the starting with the basics. He is also knowledgeable on the classic and jazz guitar.
