I am a math, writing and organizational skills tutor for students from kindergarten to college and was recently named a finalist in the SFGATE 2024 Best of the Bay for “Best Learning Center/Tutor.” I have worked as a Wyzant tutor since 2017 where I am IXL certified (2023 & 2024). In 2015, I graduated summa cum laude from the Dominican University of California, where I earned a BA in Liberal Studies/Teacher Education, a minor in mathematics and Honors. While at Dominican, I had ample classroom and one-on-one experience with students. I worked as an assistant teacher in six different elementary school classrooms throughout Marin County. In addition, I worked as one of the mathematics tutors at Dominican's learning center. In the fall of 2015 I lived in Portland where I was a tutor with Cornerstone Learning. From 2016 to 2020, I worked with Tutor Corps and Varsity Tutors in San Francisco. I have also worked as a math tutor at The Urban School of San Francisco (fall 2023). I have had experience tutoring numerous students from kindergarten up to high school in math (elementary, pre-algebra, algebra I, algebra II, geometry, trigonometry and functions/precalculus) as well as reading, writing, organizational skills and SSAT prep. I have a passion for working with students who struggle with learning differences. At the age of eight, I was diagnosed with ADD and throughout my years in education, I worked hard to gain the skills and strategies that would help me succeed and progress. As a tutor, I have a strong understanding of the needs of students. I am passionate about helping every individual go above and beyond, no matter what his or her learning style is. One of my most gratifying teaching experiences was tutoring a first grader who struggled with ADHD. He had been held back for two years in a row, but after a semester of working one-on-one with him, this student excelled and moved onto second grade at the end of the semester. In addition to tutoring, I am a choreographer of my own dance company: alyssaevemitchel.com.

ADHD

Specific to ADHD, at the age of eight I was diagnosed with ADD and throughout my years in education, I worked hard to gain the skills and strategies that would help me succeed and progress despite my learning differences. As a tutor and teacher, I have a strong understanding of the needs of students--I am passionate about helping every individual, no matter what his/her learning style is. I have specific one-on-one experience working with students struggling with both ADD and ADHD and have helped them succeed, accomplish their goals and develop into confident individuals both inside the classroom and beyond. I have specific experience with ADHD students as a substitute teacher/teacher's assistant at Live Oak School, McKinley Elementary School and in six public/charter schools in Marin County. I also have ample experience working with ADHD students as an independent tutor and tutor with Cornerstone Learning (Portland, OR) and Tutor Corps (San Francisco, CA).

In May 2015, I graduated summa cum laude from the Dominican University of California, where I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Liberal Studies/Teacher Preparation, a minor in mathematics and Honors. While at Dominican, I had ample classroom and one-on-one experience with students. I worked as an assistant teacher in five different elementary school classrooms (ranging from kindergarten to fifth grade) throughout Marin County. In addition, I worked as one of the mathematics, statistics and liberal studies tutors at Dominican's Teaching Learning Center (TLC). In my one-on-one with undergraduates, I helped students who initially struggled with concepts to ultimately master the material. Further, I helped develop students' study, test-taking, organization, and problem-solving skills. My experience also includes tutoring high school students (algebra I, algebra II, geometry, trigonometry and functions) privately. In the fall of 2015 I lived in Portland where I was a tutor for elementary through college levels with Cornerstone Learning. From February 2016 to present, I have been a tutor with Tutor Corps in San Francisco. I have had experience tutoring fifteen students through Tutor Corps from kindergarten up to high school in multiple levels of mathematics as well as reading, writing and organizational skills. In addition to teaching math, I also enjoy teaching dance and choreographing. I am currently a company dancer with Peter & Co and perform/tour with the company. I am also a guest dancer for several other Bay Area dance companies and am a freelance choreographer. Furthermore, I am a faculty member of Marin Dance Theatre and Presidio Dance Theatre where I teach contemporary, ballet and private lessons (to students from elementary to high school) and choreograph contemporary works for the pre-professional division.

Grades are improving with Alyssa’s help

Alyssa has been very patient and flexible since the beginning. We have been focusing on pretty much all core subjects (math, English, spelling). In the last 3 lessons, we started to focus on spelling and cursive which we have seen an immediate improvement. My son’s focus is getting much better, his overall grades are improving, and his confidence is building. We are very happy with his progress and will continue to work with Alyssa.

Great at engaging young children

Had two great sessions with Alyssa (and looking to do more sessions once/week). She was great in keeping my 4-year old engaged: read books, drew pictures, spelled out some words, and did some counting & basic math. Really looking forward to future sessions and seeing how she can teach him to read better and solve harder math problems!

Fantastic!

My daughter loves having Alyssa as her math tutor. Alyssa is patient and engaging, and knows how to get kids interested in and skilled at math. My daughter is in 5th grade and consistently receives 97-100 grades in math. Thank you, Alyssa!

Clear and Meaningful Tutoring

My daughter has been working with Alyssa for a couple of weeks now and we have already noticed a significant change in her confidence in Math. Alyssa very clearly explains concepts and helps guide my daughter through problems. Alyssa also provides a detailed summary of what they cover in each session which I find useful.

Excellent!

Alyssia was very accommodating. I was able to schedule an appointment right away. She was very prompt getting back to me regarding setting time and place. My son isn't very interested in math since he is so behind on the subject. Alyssia was able to bring him back to basics and build him up so he understood how to solve problems better. We will definitely be aquiring her services again.
