Bio

What's the best way to learn English? The honest answer is that there is no single best way, no "magic bullet", and no app to learn English while you sleep (at least not yet). However, there are many good strategies and tools for learning English. Which ones you use when, and how you use them to reach your goals, depends on you: your personality, your situation, and your goals. My job is to guide you on a learning path that works best for you, and keep you from getting stuck along the way....

My job is to guide you on a learning path that works best for you, and keep you from getting stuck along the way.

My professional background is in science, business, and education. I'm a language learner myself, having studied several languages and lived abroad. I understand the obstacles language learners face, and also the joy of accomplishment when you "get it" in another language.

Here's a little more about me, so you can feel confident I'm qualified to help you, I have a Master's Degree in TESOL from the University of San Francisco, earned in 2004. Since that time I have taught English in China (4 years), Turkey (3 years) and in the United States for the past 10 years. I love working with language learners at all proficiency levels, from basic literacy to academic and professional English for career advancement.

I'd like to learn more about you to see if we are a good match. If so, we can work out a plan and schedule to get you started.

English

English

I have been teaching English to non-native English speakers for 12 years, working at a variety of skill levels and with students of diverse interests and goals for learning English. I have taught adults, teenagers and children in the United States, China and Turkey and am sympathetic to the many challenges English presents to students of all ages and proficiency levels. My students know me as someone who makes learning English fun, motivates them to do their best and helps them achieve their English proficiency goals.
ESL/ESOL

ESL/ESOL

I have been teaching ESL/ESOL to adults and children for 14 years, working both in the US and abroad. I focus on a practical, communicative approach to help my students use the language as it is used in daily life - whether in casual conversation, business or academics. I draw on authentic materials in addition to following a sound pedagogical approach based on current research about language acquisition. My students have gone on to successful careers or higher education where good English language skills are essential.
Public Speaking

Public Speaking

From 2004 through 2006, I taught public speaking to university students at Shantou University in China. I was also a public speaking coach, during which time one of my students won second place in the Chinese National University English Public Speaking Competition. From 2006 through 2008, I taught public speaking at Beijing Foreign Studies University in China. Prior to becoming a teacher, I worked in public relations, writing speeches for executives, coaching them in public speaking and preparing visual presentations in a variety of formats.
Reading

Reading

In addition to teaching English to non-native speakers for 11 years, I spent many hours during the 2014-2015 school year volunteering as a reading support specialist at Jackson Elementary School (Everett, WA) assisting students who were having difficulties reading at grade level. I understand the challenges that frustrated readers face and have developed effective methods to boost confidence, interest and skills.
TOEFL

TOEFL

TOEFL is a game. Play it to win! Having a good grasp of English is not enough to achieve a high score on the TOEFL. You also need to understand the structure of the test, how it is scored, and what strategies to use to get the best score on each task. I can help you prepare most efficiently and effectively to get the score you need in the TOEFL game.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

Research and common sense tell us that vocabulary is best learned in context, not by memorizing long lists of words. I have been helping English learners increase their conversational, technical and academic vocabulary for 12 years as an EFL teacher and teacher trainer. My techniques are based on an integrated, student-centered approach to building vocabulary as you speak, listen, read and write -- not as an isolated memorization drill.
Writing

Writing

In addition to teaching basic and intermediate writing for multilingual students, I have taught English composition, business writing, and technical writing -- all at the university level -- in the United States and abroad. I just completed teaching the course, Introduction to Composition, at the University of San Francisco.

Tutor, who understans student needs

Susan is a great listener and mentor. She understands what's needed for the student, documents it, creates a baseline and goes from it so that improvement would be easily measured. Susan provides relevant hints and helps to grow the knowledge.
