Tutoring provides more time to teach to the individual, and so I aim to help others solve problems, achieve personal goals and learn about the world through their academic subjects.
Beyond lesson and assignment comprehension, I emphasize curiosity and interpretation to students. Bring your own interests, concerns and questions to meetings. That might seem irrelevant or even off-topic, but it's extremely important for authentic learning. Forming well-supported interpretations of historical figures, time periods and literary characters can help you interact with others. By understanding different perspectives, you begin to think more clearly about complex subjects. This helps you decide what to believe and how to act. Studying history and literature should be more than a record of facts and plot narrative, they should involve the fundamental problems, questions and debates of our lives.
With lifelong interests in language and storytelling, working as an editor and teacher has helped me share these passions with others. The Core Curriculum at Columbia University underscored the importance of humanities study, forming conclusions from interdisciplinary research and thinking. That broad exposure to subjects like poetry, history, and philosophy helps in tutoring literature because authors will range widely through their storytelling.
