About Jason

A friend once commented to me that my success as a tutor is due to the fact that I am, "a Renaissance man in the age of specialization." In other words, I can tutor most subjects K-12, I speak French and Portuguese fluently and have an intermediate Spanish level, and I am highly experienced with SSAT, SAT, ACT, GRE, GMAT, and TOEFL prep, among many other standardized tests. My students have told me that I'm, "funny, smart, and cool," but more importantly, I have many years of experience helping students gain confidence and achieve greater academic success, while helping improve necessary life skills such as better organization, time management, and communication.

I have a background as a social worker and counselor and, as such, I have an empathetic and genuine approach to building relationships with my students that promotes change and success. I love my job as a tutor because I'm given the opportunity to connect with different people and have seen so many of my students strengthen needed skills for both school and life. I also love standardized test prep!

I have been told I have a gift for explaining math. My technique is to identify weaknesses, explain the necessary concepts, and create or find some extra problems to strengthen needed skills. Also, identifying where many students go wrong while solving problems has proven super helpful for my students.

I have a Bachelor's degree in biology and love understanding how organisms function. A lot of bio is about memorization, so helping students find ways to memorize needed information for tests and quizzes is often the focus of our work.

I lived in Belgium as an exchange student and have been fluent in French and either tutoring or teaching it for many years. Most basic students struggle with pronunciation and the more you study French, the harder the grammar gets! But you can do it!

I love SAT, ACT, GRE, and GMAT prep! I love words, and talking about the vocabulary is the best way to understand it. We use Quizlet, and I often write sentences that help students understand the meaning and usage of the vocab. For reading comprehension, where they also sneak in vocab, having strategies to identify where in the text the answer is found is usually the most helpful.

Feel free to contact me via email.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have a Master's in Clinical Social Work from Fordham University and many years of success working with ADD/ADHD students, their families, and school counselors in order to advocate on our students' behalf.

Aspergers

I have a Master's in Clinical Social Work from Fordham University and many years of success working with students with Asperger's, their families, and school counselors in order to advocate on our students' behalf. In fact, I recently referred a young adult student I suspected of never having been properly diagnosed for an assessment and, after speaking with the student's permission to the testing PsyD, it was confirmed that he does have Asperger's and will now be getting the support he needs and deserves.

CBEST

I have over 10 years of experience helping students prepare for all sections of the CBEST. My background in standardized test prep - SSAT, ACT, SAT, GRE, and GMAT - is extensive. With the math section, I find many adults need a solid refresher of the fundamentals of number properties, algebra, and geometry.

College Counseling

I have a Master's in Clinical Social Work from Fordham University and many years of success working collaboratively with school-based college counselors to help students and their families navigate the college application process. I assist students with developing and editing their personal statements and supplemental essays while counseling and preparing students for the transition to college life.

COOP/HSPT

I have been prepping students for years the COOP and HSPT, both the math and verbal sections, with proven results. Many of my students prepare for the SSAT with me and then find that one of more of the private high school require the COOP / HSPT. As there's a lot of cross-over between the exams, I have many years of experience with these exams in particular, and the high school application process in general.

Dyslexia

I have a Master's in Clinical Social Work from Fordham University and many years of experience and success working with students with dyslexia and/or dyscalculia, their families, and school counselors in order to advocate on our students' behalf.

French

I have been teaching French to kids, teens, and adults ever since I returned home fluent after a year abroad in Belgium in 1987.

GMAT

I am currently employed at a school where I developed, implemented, and teach the GMAT Math and Verbal courses. I have proven results helping students improve their scores.

GRE

I am the GRE Math and Verbal teacher at a school in San Francisco. I developed, implemented, and currently teach both the Math and Verbal prep classes.

IELTS

I have been preparing students for the TOEFL, Cambridge, TOEIC, and IELTS exams for about 15 years. I have spent the last 13 or so years working at ESL schools in San Francisco, CA and am highly skilled preparing students for English proficiency exams.

Engaged and mindful of our time! — In my first session, Mr. H. helped me feel comfortable about reaching out for help. I was skeptical about the value of a tutor at this late point in my education. He was engaged every minute of our session, he asked questions to spark my dormant critical thinking skills and I felt comfortable sharing my ideas with him. I immediately bonded with him because he is confident, professional, and enthus ...
