I'm a lifetime learning enthusiast who loves to share! My focus is on compassionate instruction; I work to build up students study skills while mastering the material in a constructive, supporting environment.

My formal education consists of a BS in Mathematics and a BA in Economics. I have supplemented these informally by reading widely in Philosophy, History, Political Science, Biology, and Physics. I have a great passion for the history of ideas, which allows me to convey a subject's place in the greater picture of human affairs. Again and again, I've found that this allows me to offer students multiple entry points into the material they're working with; if the presentation in their lectures or textbooks does not engage the student's cognitive strengths, an alternate explanation can greatly smooth their path to mastery!

I've been tutoring college level composition intermittently for ten years, and mathematics for six. In the last two years I've transitioned to tutoring full time. During this time I've come to appreciate the tremendous returns a bit of outside help can yield: a handful of hours in a positive, encouraging learning environment can be the difference between years of struggle and a lifetime of enjoyment.

I hope you'll give me a chance to share the experience of loving learning with you!

Calculus,

Calculus

I completed a degree in Mathematics at the University of San Francisco where I received A's in Calculus I, II, and III. I have been tutoring Calculus for three years now, so I can cover all of differential calculus and most of integral calculus from memory. For multi-variable calculus (calc III) I do have to dig out a bit of reference material!

Linear Algebra,

Linear Algebra

I took "Linear Algebra" as part of my Math degree, and "Math for Economists" (a graduate level course in optimization of matrices in arbitrary dimensions) as part of my Economics degree. I study abstract algebra as a hobby in my spare time (abstract algebra is a surprisingly good bus ride diversion) and am quite familiar with the history of the discipline, and alternate lines of argument for a number of significant results. I had the good fortune to study Linear Algebra with a professor who emphasized its connections with the geometry of transformations of the plane, so I can convey the material graphically as well as symbolically.

Patient and helpful math tutor

Brian continues this year to tutor our 10th grade daughter with Geometry. Again, we are thankful for his patience and wisdom in helping out with a teenager that struggles with math. Brian communicates well and his lesson notes are top notch. We have recommended him to other families, too.

Awesome Teacher

So far my son has had two sessions with Brian and loves working with him. Brian was able to immediately pick up on my son’s strengths and weaknesses in order to fine tune his lesson plan for him. This is the most my son has been engaged in math homework and we are already seeing a difference in his ability to accomplish it with less frustration.

Super Patient, Informative, and Clear Explanations

I worked on precalc trigonometic functions and how to graph them with Brian. Going in I had no idea how to do it and but after the session I was super confident! He made great real life connections to the work, made the problems easy to understand, and was very patient! Would definitely recommend
