I have been teaching languages since 2000. I started tutoring in Switzerland and Japan, and have been teaching Japanese, French and Latin in the Bay Area since 2014. I work with adults of all levels (from 18 years old and up). I have experience with one-on-one lessons, group lessons, online lessons, and schoolroom classes. (For groups of two people, my rate is $100/hr). I teach from an hour and up, for weekly consistent scheduling.

I was born and raised in Switzerland. Because my father is Swiss and my mother is Japanese, I have spoken French and Japanese since childhood. As a youth, I spent summers in Japan with extended family. While I was an undergraduate student, I worked as a French teacher for foreign students at école Lémania in Switzerland, and also as a Latin tutor to junior and high school students for 2 years.

At the University of Geneva in Switzerland, I earned a “Licence es Lettres,” equivalent to a Bachelor of Arts degree, and obtained degrees in Japanese, ancient Roman history, and Latin. After graduating, I moved to Tokyo to pursue a doctorate in ancient Japanese grammar at the University of Tokyo. However, I left the doctorate program after two years when I found a greater calling in Tokyo's fashion world.

In Japan, I worked as a PR fashion manager for a variety of European brands including Giuseppe Zanotti Designs, and as a contributing writer for Time Out Tokyo. I still also work for Japanese companies as an interpreter (Japanese-French-English) and adviser with Japanese department stores and import company during European fashion events, and go back to Japan and Europe regularly. I recently worked for the inflight magazine of the Japanese airline company ANA as a coordinator and interpreter for their San Francisco issues. I am also a cultural consultant and travel curator. Hired as a Japanese cultural expert, I worked with Airbnb to help them curate their promotional tour of Tokyo for their new Exper

I am a native French speaker who has graduated from the University of Geneva in Literature. I studied Latin for 11 years, which gives me a strong base for understanding both the development of French as a language and French grammar. I have worked as a French teacher for foreign students at École Lémania in Switzerland for two years, and taught Latin to junior and high school private students. I use various books and magazines I have picked up internationally and am always open to using my students' preferred materials. I like to collaboratively decide on what learning materials work best and am regularly updating my personal educational library. I also create custom exercises when needed and develop tailor-made programs based on individual needs.

I am a native Japanese speaker with an international upbringing. I studied Japanese literature and ancient Japanese grammar at the University of Geneva where I graduated with a License es Letters (equivalent to Bachelor of Arts degree). I then studied at the University of Tokyo for two years in a PhD program, and worked for 10 years as a PR, consultant and editor in Tokyo, as well as a French/Japanese tutor. I regularly go back to Japan and update my personal educational library as well. To my regular Japanese-language students, I provide an exclusive newsletter about buzz in Japan, fun tips, Japanese related events in the Bay Area, and more. This complement to my lessons will help my clients connect even more with Japan and its culture.

Awesome tutor

Yuki is an amazing French tutor. She's attentive to my goals in French and works actively to help me achieve them. Her lesson plans are fun and engaging. I appreciate how she picks novels and articles that follow my interests. Overall, she's a brilliant and organized tutor with a deep understanding of French. I definitely feel like I'm progressing faster than I would have if I had enrolled in typical community college class. Thank you so much, Yuki!

Friendly, knowledgeable and flexible

Yuki Nathalie is a lovely person, and a patient and engaging tutor for my son. She encourages him and is happy to indulge him on his interests in the language and culture, while she stays on task. In just a couple of months, my son has learned so much; his fluency and comprehension are quite impressive, and I know it is thanks to Yuki.

Excellent French Tutor

Yuki taught my daughter beginning French for about a year and a half. I recommend her highly without any reservations. Yuki is a nice, thoughtful and rigorous tutor. She is also a committed teacher — her lessons were organized according to our immediate needs/objectives, and accommodating to Theo’s schedule and temperament. We are going to France for a year, and b/c the middle school here in Oakland doesn't offer a foreign language, we hired Yuki who met my 12-year-old daughter once a week at a cafe near her school. Our daughter now knows quite a bit of vocabulary, a number of verbs and various tenses, and can have a basic conversation with her peers and adult in French. Her pronunciation is v. impressive. For the most part, the lessons were drawn from the Bien Dit books and worksheets. But some of Yuki’s pedagogical strategies include a postcard/letter writing exchange in which she would write to my daughter about her business trip to Japan, and Theo would respond accordingly in French about her spring break in LA. In the following lesson, Yuki would correct her grammar and spelling. Sometimes, they would read books together. When we return to the States, and if our daughter is into it, we are seriously considering asking Yuki if she would like to continue teaching Theo French in order to prepare her for high school French and the AP French exam.

Excellent Teacher

Yuki helped me see where I needed improvement on in my Japanese. I am glad I got to try out what I know and get feedback on what I need to work on. I got to test out my grammar and listening skills. It was a bit tough for me to keep a conversation without having to pause and think about how I was going to say my sentences correctly. Yuki was very helpful writing down words I had trouble with or wasn't sure about. Then she would explain what the word meant and how it was used.

Excellent French teacher - native speaker

Yuki is a native French speaker (native fluent Japanese too!). She's attentive, experienced and helpful. She understands how to teach language and is both professional and down-to earth. In short, she is excellent.

A knowledgeable and diligent tutor

In our first session, Yuki was able to explain clearly and easily how to use a couple of confusing particles that show up frequently in Japanese. I've gone through a number of grammar books looking for answers to how to use these particles but often ended up even more confused. Yuki has a simple and direct way to her teaching style that turns the complicated into the uncomplicated. By shining her light on perplexing subjects, she's made learning Japanese understandable and fun. Yuki is a natural teacher and I look forward to learning more from her.

Awesome tutor!

I am half Japanese and have had a hard time finding a course that is relevant and appropriate for my particular level. Yuki has helped me create a custom course that challenges me in areas of strength while also addressing my weaknesses. She goes beyond teaching from the textbook and uses real life materials-articles, current events, emails, etc.-to create a relevant and flexible curriculum. This is much more motivating and useful than the often abstract material used in typical language classes! Furthermore, I really appreciate the time she devotes outside of our lessons, correcting my emails, answering my questions, and sending me articles. Yuki is an awesome tutor and cares about her students!

Great tutor!

My son struggled with French all first semester. We started with Yuki about February or March, (my son's grade had dropped to a D). Yuki worked so hard with my son and got his grade up to a B by the end of the semester. He NEVER would have done it without her!!
