A little about me:
My name is Doug H. and I am a twenty-four-year-old Liberal Studies and English Major currently attending San Francisco State University. I spent the previous five years in the military where I worked as a apart of the Educational Services Provider on my ship where I conducted ACT, SAT, ASVAB, and CLEP exam tutoring, practice and training. I'm originally from Florida and have been in the area for roughly two years now.
I'm a diverse tutor that can handle a wide range of subjects. My major is interdisciplinary in nature which gives me the unique advantage to teach English, Arts, Social Sciences, Physical Sciences, and Mathematics not only individually but as they subtlety interweave in and out of each other.
More importantly however is my ability to empathize with students. I was once a student who struggled and suffered from Attention Deficit Disorder. This background combined with my educational training allows me to find weaknesses and build lesson plans that not only teach the subject matter but the reason why the student fell behind and how to get them ahead. Doug is a super tutor all around. He is very patient and has the expertise. He knows how to retain/ maintain the child's focus and interest.
My son wasn't too happy to meet with a tutor at first. He met with Doug and felt much more confident about his knowledge of Geometry but could see where he needs work in dealing with test taking. Doug helped him see his strengths and ability in math while acknowledging that its easy to make mistakes if you rush. My son actually hopes to meet with him again - that's a huge achievement!
Doug started working with my daughter in European history but we have moved on to chemistry and geometry. He is wonderful and so accommodating! He has a great way of explaining the lessons in very understandable way. Most of all, he has a way of making my daughter feel comfortable and at ease. I know we will continue to use him till he tires of us!
Douglas has been extremely helpful in assisting my fifth grade daughter with her various homework assignments. She is currently enrolled in a private school in North County as has a variety of assignments. She does well thanks to Douglas and his ability to maintain a consistent relationship without spoon-feeding her.
Both my sons work with Doug, but my eldest has worked with Doug more and I can say that after every session with Doug, he is more confident and ready for a next lesson at school. Thank you Doug for all your great knowledge and help!
Doug has spent several sessions with my son tutoring him in Geometry and both his skill at the subject and the easy way he relates to my son are simply amazing! We were happy to find Doug and have made plans for him to tutor my son through his eight week summer break. Thanks Doug!
During our first interaction Doug assessed my sons level in a very kind, respectful way. My son felt very comfortable and not embarrassed about his situation, this was a wonderful first meeting.
I had a good first lesson with Doug and he was really helpful and understood exactly what I wanted to learn. He is helping me as I work to improve my English.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have completed an Associates of Arts in Liberal studies from Central Texas College and currently go to California State University as a Liberal Studies major. I have taken classes in Child Development, Physical Education for k-6, Music for Elementary School Teachers. I have also taken Mathematics for teaching K-6 as well as a course designed to give tools to help teach children in all subjects.
