Often, people have something they need to say and are unsure how to say it most effectively. I am passionate about helping others to express their ideas as clearly and eloquently as possible.
I specialize in editing academic papers, college admission essays, cover letters, business emails, and creative writing. My education in literature has given me a firm, intuitive grasp of the language. During my MA, I received a grade of A+ for 5 out of 8 seminar papers, and one of those was published in a peer-reviewed academic journal.
I can help you at any stage of the writing process: brainstorming ideas, organizing your thoughts into an outline, making sure the content makes sense and addresses the prompt, beginning to write the first draft, editing for clarity, word choice, and flow, or detailed proofreading to fix grammar, spelling, punctuation, formatting, etc. I am able to either go through the editing process with you in an online lesson or work independently on a document that you send me.
I have worked with high school, university, Master's, and PhD students, and edited academic papers on literature, economics, religious studies, international relations, higher education administration, social work policy, racial inequality, and more. In terms of college admission essays, I have worked with students applying to universities such as Stanford and MIT to study computer science, philosophy, and business. I am currently working with an international student on MBA applications for Harvard, Duke, and Yale. As a literature graduate, avid reader, and aspiring travel writer/poet, I can also edit and give feedback on creative work.
My wide-ranging travel experience on 6 continents and 7 years of working as an ESL conversation tutor has made me comfortable relating to students from any background and quick to understand the intended meaning of ESL speakers.
There is nothing more satisfying to me than when a student reacts to my edits with "THAT is what I really wanted to say."

ESL/ESOL

Hello! Thank you for considering my classes. I have 7 years of experience tutoring and teaching ESL. I tutored Japanese university students for one year when I was a university student myself. After finishing my education, I went to South Korea and spent one year teaching one-to-one lessons to adults, and one year teaching in a university classroom. When I returned to San Francisco, I began teaching private ESL lessons through Wyzant and other tutoring platforms. I have taught students from all over the world (from all continents except Antarctica!) and I love getting to know about my students' lives and cultures through our conversations! Currently, I am offering interview preparation, help with any form of writing such as emails or academic papers (I also work on Wyzant as a proofreader/editor), and conversation-based classes where I teach through correcting students' mistakes during conversation. In my conversation classes, we can either have a casual, free-flowing conversation or speak about a subject we have determined beforehand. After the class, I will send you notes with all the corrections I made so you can review them later. Please feel free to send me a message if you have any questions!

MBA/MPA Application – Best Proofreader, Storyteller, and Supporter!

Sylvie is the best proofreader I have ever worked with. I would highly recommend her to anyone who is seeking help in writing. She works efficiently, patiently, and makes my experience very educational and uplifting. Efficient: We came up with a way to work together efficiently. We usually have two rounds of review per school’s essay. I sent my first draft full of comments to get her opinions on the contents to ensure that I’ve addressed the prompts thoroughly. She’d return the revised version with clarifying questions and some edits. It is essential to have a second pair of eyes on the content as sometimes I’d assume people know the backstories without being aware. Then I’d respond to her questions and she’d return her final edits with all levels of issues fully addressed. The final version looks 100x better than the first draft as my stories are fully expressed and razor-sharped. She usually returns things in one day and always communicates in advance if things come up. This is precious since it was around the holiday season by the time I applied. Patient: I’ve applied to six schools plus three scholarships, even I get frustrated for having to tailor the same stories over and over to meet different schools’ styles. But Sylvie treats every application as if she saw it for the first time and can always find ways to improve. In addition, Sylvie is clearly very experienced working with ESL (English as Second Language) students and can think from our shoes, which to me is incredibly helpful. Educational: This process is not just about proofreading, but a systematic way to revamp my writing. Not only does she help me improve lower-level concerns (word choice, grammar…), she would spend time explaining the reasons behind some edits and give more context about American English. I used to avoid English writing as much as possible. After working with her, I definitely feel more confident and comfortable in writing. Uplifting: It is cheerful to have Sylvie as a champion through the application process as it requires quite a bit of soul-searching and can be grilling. I sometimes have to fight against self-doubt and Sylvie has been very supportive throughout. I can tell that she is truly passionate about writing and genuinely cares about my success. Thanks to Sylvie’s support, I’m admitted to some of the world’s best programs (E.g. Harvard, Duke), which I could not have imagined without her support in this tough application season. If you are still choosing among hundreds of proofreaders on Wyzant, look no further as working with Sylvie is such a rewarding experience.

Knowledgeable, considerate, helpful tutor

Initially, Sylvie was great at communicating how the tutoring could work in terms of giving essay feedback to my child, as my child preferred working back and forth in google docs, so that is what they did. I gave her a heads up about what to expect, and she responded quickly and confirmed what we needed to accomplish. She gave great content suggestions regarding this essay, as well as proofreading, to ensure the document improved each time we worked with her. She also respected each deadline given. I highly recommend Sylvie!

Sylvie is the best!

Sylvie is a knowledgeable and supportive tutor. I needed her help with my final portfolio for a creative writing course and she provided excellent feedback and some very helpful edits. She is well-versed with grammar, language, and structure but also the fundamental elements of storytelling. She went above and beyond to help me with my final edits when she was on a trip with a bad WiFi connection, which just comes to show you how dedicated she is to her students. I highly recommend Sylvie. You won't be disappointed!

Good listening skills and patient

We went over a cover letter that I wrote as a first draft. I emailed it to her a few days prior to our meeting so we would both be ready to discuss it. She had already made reviews and was ready for suggestions and a lesson in mind

Knowledgable tutor who exceeded all my expectations!

Sylvie is an incredible and attentive tutor who genuinely cares about helping her students. The feedback and suggestions she gave me on my MBA essays were immaculate. Her eye for proofreading is truly unparalleled. Sylvia is a master of the English language and I would highly recommend her to anyone looking to improve their essay or writing skills in general. Her assistance allowed me to feel confident about my applications and for that, I am eternally grateful! Thank you, Sylvie!!

Knowledgable and Patient Proofreader

Sylvie can always catch my grammar errors and patiently explain the rationale behind them. As a non-native speaker, my English writing has improved a lot with her help. Sylvie was also very pleasant to work with since she gave me a lot of encouragement. I would recommend her tutoring to anyone.
