About Janice

I am a California credentialed French teacher with a BA from University of the Pacific and twelve years teaching experience with all levels of French to Advanced Placement. I worked for the company that built the B.A.R.T. trains and software as a contract writing assistant and interpreting legal documents to French and back to English. I traveled to headquarters in Paris and the manufacturing site in the north. I certainly learned a few new language arenas with that position! However, teaching is my passion.

I lived in France as a child for fourteen years, (parents are American however) which allows me to understand the most common problems that arise for English speakers. For example helping them find patterns and connections. I believe learning French should be exciting and yes, fun. Because I see from both sides it encourages success with my students.

Did you know that French is the second most spoken language in the world? It is the official second language of the United Nations, NGOs, more than 25 countries are considered "Francophone." Learning French will enhance knowledge of medical, technical, engineering terminology and more. Did you know there are more than 40,000 French words in the English language?

I believe teaching "culture" is important since language doesn't develop in a vacuum. My students have always enjoyed this aspect of the learning process.

I have been tutoring students for a number of years in my home and at school tutor centers, sometimes children and families of friends who are traveling abroad. I also have tutored English language development with French-speaking adults from Quebec.

Mille mercis,Norma. Isabella is an active learner. It is a pleasure to work with her. She just needed the connections for it to make sense. I'm looking forward to continuing to help her. It's all about French made easy. She's very bright and has such desire not just to learn but to know. A true pleasure. :-)

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I have taught English-language development and was the staff advisor for all teachers assisting them to work with that population. As a French teacher, a lot of what I do is related to reinforcing English grammar. It is an inevitability. I have also taught journalism. My goal is always to clarify and to show connections and yes, even shortcuts and patterns. I look forward to hearing from you.

ESL/ESOL

I have taught English-language development. I have also been an advisor to all high school staff in order for them to be aware how to support their students in every subject. My success rate is high.

French

I currently teach French all levels French 1- AP and have seven years' experience. I used to tutor high school students and adults prior to teaching. I worked with a French company in the SF Bay Area (that made the BART trains and electronics) I lived in France as a child. I am a California credential French teacher. This is my primary subject.

Grammar

As a French and English language development teacher, English grammar development and reinforcement are key. For that reason I believe I can offer the support needed to improve and understand why grammar is important. I don't believe it should be difficult, which is why I created ways to simplify in a way that students retain the information. I find humorous ways to make connections. Humor is important to the learning process.

Proofreading

In college I was a writer for the school newspaper, which lead to becoming the editor-in-chief. Proofing was a major part of the job. This in turn led to a part-time job as a journalist for a local newspaper. While at university many students sought me out or professors referred them to me because my essays were diligently proofed before submitting. As a teacher, proofreading is just part of the job. I teach French and English-language development.

Public Speaking

I am a facilitator of a high school system for world language and have been for five years. Part of this is to motivate teachers to improve and implement new best practices. This requires research and presentation.

In high school I was on the debate team. We competed on the state level. I also took a public speaking course in college.

I currently have a student on Wyzant I have helped write and prepare an essay that was also used as a public speaking activity.

I believe my experience can be of support for students and adults.

Reading

When I was young my family lived in France. I learned to read phonetically. For a while in my local area I tutored elementary students who struggled with reading. Interestingly, the company I worked for used the same system I did as a child. As a French and English-language development teacher, it became clear that in order to learn and understand context is simply a matter of finding meaning of a complex or unknown word, by getting the "gist" of the sentence, which helps lead to the meaning of the unknown word.

Vocabulary

As with any teacher, knowledge of vocabulary is crucial. I find this true as both a French and English-language development teacher. It is important to teach students how to use academic language. This clearly includes vocabulary. I believe I can be of service and support to students who are challenged by vocabulary.

Writing

I have writing and journalism experience with high school students. Students have come to me for help with their college applications essays. I have done so for their success. It is something I have helped with outside of my usual classes. It's been an honor to have been asked and a pleasure to see the support enhance their success as they hear from universities.
