They don’t see any practical purpose in what they are learning. Part of it is how the curriculum is taught; some of it has do with understanding this generation’s student culture.

Any skill requires practice and effort, and I am able to explain to the student that math competency is like exercising any muscle or learning skiing or playing the guitar. To be able to be good at it, we need to practice. I have good experience in both business world as well as academic world and hence am able to show students the relevancy of what they are learning and how it applies to the world.
Math is about building on top of each layer. If the foundation is not strong, the building may collapse. Hence, I recommend an early start so students learn the fundamentals and enjoy the classes ahead.
I have been tutoring math in the last 20 years and some of my students are already in the business world. Some of them got into top tier universities.
I graduated from UC Berkeley and joined financial services industry to get some business experience. Meanwhile I have been teaching /Tutoring Math and other quantitative courses just because I am enjoying it. I am currently teaching quantitative classes such as accounting at UC Berkeley as Adjunct Professor.
I am fairly confident that I can help your child in Math classes at all levels.
