My name is Melissa and I have been an educator teaching in-person and more presently on-line for more than 25 years. I graduated Long Island University, Magna Cum Laude with a bachelors degree majoring in Journalism. I specialize in tutoring English and Spanish reading, writing, conversation, and public speaking.
I have experience tutoring Special Needs Students (Autistim and ADHD).

My first teaching job was while I was in my second year of college as a Journalism teacher for middle school students and I fell in love with education!
During the past 25 years, I have worked with students K-12 and Adult Education.
My life has been dedicated to education and helping students to reach their goals.
I am experienced in working with students to help them advance their skills in reading, writing, speaking English, making public presentations, and building life long learning skills.
I have taught Spanish to new speakers of the language assisting them to read, write, and converse with fluency.
I am also experienced in helping students improve and master standardized testing formats, so they can get high scores on the exam.
I can also teach students meditation and mindfulness techniques that can help them to study, take exams with less stress, and master their own thoughts on learning.
I have assisted hundreds of students to pass the High School Equivalency Exam, the TOEFL exam, and the ACT.
I am a very patient teacher and try my best to make learning fun, while also reaching our learning goals and milestones.
My proudest achievement is the success of my Autistic son. I have been homeschooling him for 10 years and he has excelled brilliantly, and I have humbly learned to be a very effective special education teacher.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

For the past ten years, Kindergarten through 9th grade, I have been teaching my Autistic son writing, reading, math, social studies, science, and how to use a computer. I have adapted teaching and learning techniques from the Montessori and Socratic methods to teach my son and also give him the skills to become an independent learner. Autistic learners need to be given opportunities to learn through their individual talents, and from there you can create curriculum that aligns with their interests. It is very plausible to help the learner reach the age appropriate milestones by testing out what works for the learner, and also using adaptive technology in cases where the Autistic learner does not have the cognitive or physical ability to complete a task.

With a Bachelor's Degree in Journalism and more than 25 years in the field of education, I have taught K-12 and Adult Education. I have also dedicated my life to homeschooling my Autistic son for the past 10 years. He is presently a 9th grader who is an independent learner and excited about learning. I am always inspired to teach learners of all ages to do the same!

I am a native speaker of Spanish who loves to teach new learners of Spanish. I find fun ways to teach basic vocabulary, verbs, and grammar. I will work with you on developing conversation and listening skills, so you can have conversations with your friends in Spanish. Please connect with me if you need to improve your Spanish for school, or are planning to take a trip to a Spanish speaking country, or need to improve your Spanish for a job.

Patient and Welcoming!

Melissa and I did a zoom call before meeting her in-person. She made my son and I feel very comfortable together. She was not only patient, but also very neurodivergent-affirming and allowed my son the time to acclimate to the new space, touch and explored new objects and textures, as well as let him express himself and demonstrate his personality and skills. She also integrated technology into our session which my son was very excited to practice. Thank you, Melissa!
