Hi, I’m Melissa! I’m a scientist working in computational chemistry and molecular simulation, with a PhD in Quantum Chemistry from Iowa State University and postdoctoral training at Stanford University. I have several years of experience teaching and tutoring chemistry at both the high school and college levels, including general chemistry, organic chemistry, thermodynamics, and introductory quantum mechanics. I began tutoring as an undergraduate teaching assistant and quickly discovered how much I enjoy helping students build confidence in challenging subjects like chemistry, math, and biology.
My approach to tutoring focuses on building a strong conceptual understanding rather than memorization. I specialize in breaking down complex and abstract topics—especially in chemistry—into clear, intuitive explanations. I tailor each session to the student’s learning style, whether that means using visual analogies, step-by-step problem solving, or connecting concepts to real-world applications. My goal is to help students not only improve their grades, but also develop the ability to approach new problems independently and confidently.
Throughout my teaching experience, I’ve worked with students from a wide range of backgrounds and skill levels, from those struggling with foundational concepts to those preparing for advanced coursework and exams. I’ve taught in both group classroom settings and one-on-one environments, and I enjoy adapting my teaching style to meet each student’s needs. Seeing students reach those “aha” moments and gain confidence in subjects they once found intimidating is the most rewarding part of tutoring for me.
Now, alongside my work in industry, I continue tutoring because I genuinely enjoy teaching and staying connected to students. I’m excited to help high school and college students succeed in chemistry, math, and biology, and to make even the most difficult topics feel approachable and manageable.
