I have been tutoring for 10+ years, helping my peers with essay writing and mathematics - this kickstarted my job as a freelance tutor all through University and Graduate School. I tutored K-12 English, Maths, and Biology to a few students via word of mouth for these years.

I attended University of California in Davis, majoring in Biological Sciences with an emphasis in Medical Microbiology. After I completed that degree, I considered Dental School, but pursued Microbiology instead. I attended Colorado State University and received a Master’s Degree in Microbiology. My Master’s was thesis based, so I have had a lot of practice writing at various levels of academia.

Beginning this year, I’ve started offering my tutoring services through companies geared towards K-12. Most of my students have been in 1st-3rd grade, so there has been a degree of teaching my students skills to use in the classroom to stay focused after the large gap in their social development due to the pandemic.

My approach with them is to observe their behaviors as they work - if they start to fidget, start losing focus on the task, I will often tell them to take a 5 minute break once finished with their current task and to do something else active. For the first graders, I would even integrate body movement (ie. spelling letters with arms) into the work to keep their blood flowing and their mind focused. Older students focus more easily as they do have the experience with seeing that many peers at once - and I have seen academic progress on exams within the month we started doing sessions. These students, I have advised around cramming for exams - after introducing one particular student to the pomodoro method, they found they were easily able to study all portions of the exam they were cramming for.

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

My first experience tutoring Algebra 1 was literally as I was learning it myself - my teacher would sit me down with other students and have me tutor them in what we had already learned. I started tutoring mathematics as a job in 2016, and continued through 2020, solely 1 on 1 students. Thus far my students have shown improvement on exams within the first two months of tutoring sessions, depending on frequency.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

My first experience tutoring Algebra 2 followed the students I helped during Algebra 1 - I continued to help my peers outside of the classroom with Algebra 2, even though I was no longer required to. I started tutoring mathematics as a job in 2016, and continued through 2020, solely 1 on 1 students. Thus far my students have shown improvement on exams within the first two months of tutoring sessions, depending on frequency.
Biology

Biology

My first degree was in Biological Sciences, so I often tutored my peers as they took the Biology courses after me - first small one-on-one help with homework, then small group help with exam prep. I’m incredibly familiar with Biology for High School, having seen the curriculum for Biology, AP Biology, Advanced Biology, and Accelerated Biology over my time in high school and university. I understand the frustrations many of my students have with the memorisation involved, and help cater to their methods of learning & recall.
Creative Writing

Creative Writing

I enjoyed writing fiction all through grade school, and did not lose the passion in college. I had the honor of proofreading and editing multiple short stories and novellas for other authors around the SF Bay Area, and have been a featured writer in 3 poetry festivals. I spent years in University studying English, cultivating an appreciation for poetry, flash fiction, vignettes, and the anthology.

Microbiology

Microbiology

I found my intrigue for microbiology when studying biological sciences, and I believe I can help other students understand that curiosity and use it to drive their learning. I am familiar with the curriculum for Microbiolology minors, Microbiology majors, and graduate programs in Microbiology. It is the most recent subject I’ve studied at length, and the subject I hosted study sessions & tutoring sessions for most.
