I have been tutoring for 10+ years, helping my peers with essay writing and mathematics - this kickstarted my job as a freelance tutor all through University and Graduate School. I tutored K-12 English, Maths, and Biology to a few students via word of mouth for these years.
I attended University of California in Davis, majoring in Biological Sciences with an emphasis in Medical Microbiology. After I completed that degree, I considered Dental School, but pursued Microbiology instead. I attended Colorado State University and received a Master’s Degree in Microbiology. My Master’s was thesis based, so I have had a lot of practice writing at various levels of academia.
Beginning this year, I’ve started offering my tutoring services through companies geared towards K-12. Most of my students have been in 1st-3rd grade, so there has been a degree of teaching my students skills to use in the classroom to stay focused after the large gap in their social development due to the pandemic.
My approach with them is to observe their behaviors as they work - if they start to fidget, start losing focus on the task, I will often tell them to take a 5 minute break once finished with their current task and to do something else active. For the first graders, I would even integrate body movement (ie. spelling letters with arms) into the work to keep their blood flowing and their mind focused. Older students focus more easily as they do have the experience with seeing that many peers at once - and I have seen academic progress on exams within the month we started doing sessions. These students, I have advised around cramming for exams - after introducing one particular student to the pomodoro method, they found they were easily able to study all portions of the exam they were cramming for.
