Hello! I am currently a PhD student in San Francisco, California, studying epidemiology and biostatistics. My research areas include infectious disease and social epidemiology. I received my BA in Psychology from Reed College and my MPH in Epidemiology from University of New Mexico. I also studied anatomy and physiology for a semester at University of Sydney.
In terms of my educational background, I received excellent grades in English, Literature, and History in high school, and received scores in the 98th percentile on my standardized testing for English Language and Composition and Reading. I also received a 5 in AP English and AP Spanish Literature. I struggled with math and science as a middle and high school student, but I excelled as a neuroscience major in college and went on to receive a Masters degree in Epidemiology. Now as a doctoral student in Epidemiology and Biostatistics, I am confident that I can be a compassionate and effective tutor for students who feel intimidated by math and science. Although I have pursued an academic career in science, I also excel in writing and humanities and am fluent in Spanish, so I can cater to those needs as well.
My previous teaching experience includes 2 years as an undergraduate neuroscience TA, 2 years as a masters-level biostatistics TA, and 1 year as a PhD-level epidemiology TA. My previous tutoring experiences includes 6+ years of tutoring reading, writing, basic science, psychology, anatomy, and physiology to students age 15-22. My teaching experiences have either been in a small classroom setting (as a TA) or one on one as a tutor.
I approach teaching with patience and attention to each student's individual's needs. Some students respond better to visual learning, while others better to auditory repetition, and I am able to cater to each student's personal learning style while fostering an encouraging and productive teaching environment. I look forward to getting to know all my future students!
