After graduating from UC Berkeley, I built a career in social impact marketing that took me from California to New York to Europe and back. My first tutoring experience was with middle school students in Europe. I realized then that I loved the experience of engaging directly with a learner, no matter their level or age. I am currently a volunteer tutor at the nonprofit Reading Partners, which mostly works with emerging readers at the elementary level. I plan to get a teaching certificate so I can continue to foster a love of and confidence around reading and writing among young folks. In terms of teaching approach, I think it is vital to emphasize phonemic awareness and orthographic mapping so that students can decode words, without forgetting comprehension and analysis. I love getting to know students’ interests and learning styles so I can tailor my teaching strategies to their needs!
