I'm Justin. I graduated from UC Berkeley with a bachelor's degree in computer science. I worked in the software industry for many years, helping other professionals improve their skills as part of the software development process. My educational and work experiences inform my approach to learning: I believe strongly in focusing on the fundamentals, giving students the foundation needed to tackle complex, new topics on their own. I try to use programming projects as a vehicle for demonstrating the application of crucial concepts which form the backbone of computer science. I aim to maximize the educational value students obtain from their coursework, rather than merely providing guidance sufficient to meet project requirements.

For the past year, I have been tutoring students and mentoring professionals in my spare time, using online platforms. I usually work with college aged students, but I have also helped high school and middle school students, as well as hobbyists interested in learning about programming. Though I craft lesson plans in advance, I adapt my approach to the learner in real-time, with the goal of effectively communicating the material, rather than simply completing a planned lesson.

I strive to build a rapport with students. I message students prior to a lesson in order to understand their needs, and I'm happy to reply to questions sent after the lesson concludes.
