Hi there! I'm Will: a Harvard graduate, former high school science teacher, and current third-year UCSF medical student. I have over 8 years of experience in teaching and tutoring students with diverse backgrounds and skill levels. As an educator, I view myself first and foremost as a facilitator of learning, with the primary goal of guiding my students to develop competencies and habits that will allow them to be academically successful on their own!

At Harvard, I graduated cum laude with a Bachelor's degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology and a Master's in Education the following year. Afterward, I taught AP Biology and AP Chemistry for three years at a high school near San Francisco, an experience that has given me a deep knowledge of the structure and content of those courses.

I have since transitioned from education to medicine and am now a third-year medical student at the University of California - San Francisco, the only medical school ranked in the top 5 for both research and primary care. The college and medical school application processes are extremely competitive, and it's more important than ever to submit compelling essays that convey your background and passions. From brainstorming ideas to editing applications, I would love to help advise you on that journey!

Outside of AP courses, I am also happy to coach you through a variety of different standardized tests. I scored a 2330 on the SAT (99th percentile) back when the test was out of 2400, and in January 2022, I scored a 522 on the MCAT (99th percentile) with a score breakdown of 131 (CP), 131 (CARS), 130 (BB), and 130 (PS). While test practice and content review are important to prepare for these two standardized exams, I believe the most useful tools are the variety of test-taking strategies that allowed me to answer questions both efficiently and correctly. I would be excited to share those strategies with you.

Please don't hesitate to reach out. I would love to help you achieve your academic goals!

Biology

Biology

I graduated cum laude from Harvard in 2019 with a Bachelor's degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology. The following year, I received my Master's in Education through Harvard's Graduate School of Education. For the past three years, I taught AP Biology and AP Chemistry at a high school near San Francisco, giving me a deep knowledge of the structure and content of those courses. As an educator, I view myself primarily as a facilitator of learning, as opposed to the source of knowledge. Biology can feel daunting for the sheer amount of information you need to know, but I can help you develop the study strategies to achieve success!
Chemistry

Chemistry

I graduated cum laude from Harvard in 2019 with a Bachelor's degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology. The following year, I received my Master's in Education through Harvard's Graduate School of Education. For the past three years, I taught AP Biology and AP Chemistry at a high school near San Francisco, giving me a deep knowledge of the structure and content of those courses. In fact, my students' pass rate on the AP Chemistry exam nearly tripled after my first year of teaching. As an educator, I view myself primarily as a facilitator of learning, as opposed to the source of knowledge. Chemistry can oftentimes feel abstract, and I would love to help you develop strategies to achieve academic success!
College Counseling

College Counseling

I have worked extensively with high schoolers over the last 3 years to improve their writing. I have advised over 15+ students in how to craft the perfect college application, not only providing feedback on their essays, but also helping them to reflect on the experiences that have made them the person they are today. Previous students I've counseled have been admitted to UC Berkeley, Stanford, UCLA, and Yale.

ISEE

As a Phillips Exeter alumnus, I am very familiar with private school admissions and testing. I also have a strong history of scoring well on standardized tests (2330 on the old SAT, and 99th percentile on the MCAT). From reading comprehension to math problem-solving, I can help your student identify their areas of growth and develop strategies to strengthen them.
MCAT

MCAT

In January 2022, I scored a 522 on my MCAT, with a score breakdown of 131, 131, 130, 130. Not only do I feel comfortable tutoring the subject material, but I also have a deep understanding of the strategies needed to breakdown the test questions and avoid common pitfalls.
SAT Math

SAT Math

I graduated cum laude from Harvard in 2019 with a degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology. I scored a perfect 800 on the math section of the SAT (and a 750 in reading and 780 in writing). In order to do well on this section, you need to be both accurate and efficient with answering questions, and I am happy to share the test-taking strategies that will help you achieve success!

Will is a great tutor!

Will helps me learn step-by-step conceptually and fundamentally so I genuinely understand what I’m doing and how to do it. This helps me on tests and makes the class much more straightforward to comprehend. His teaching style is very hands-on, and he ensures I’m competent before moving on to the next subject. He is also a very kind, patient person, so I feel comfortable asking questions and clarifying any confusion. Overall, Will is one of the best tutors I’ve had and has increased my understanding and overall grade in my honors chemistry class.

Review for Will L

Will has been a wonderful AP Biology tutor for my daughter and her friend. He is patient, deeply knowledgeable, and did a terrific job breaking down complex topics into more understandable pieces. He is also extremely communicative and flexible in scheduling sessions, sometimes even on an hour’s notice. I strongly recommend him as a tutor!

Highly Recommended - College Application Essays

Will has made the process of writing my sons’ college application essays manageable and productive. He helped them brainstorm ideas, worked with them on sharpening the flow and cohesiveness of their essays, while providing them with clear feedback and helpful insights, editing and sharpening their writing, until a final draft was reached - one that was reflecting the child’s personality and values, in the child’s own voice, while also being sharp and compelling. Will is knowledgable, professional, and skillful while also being kind and easy to work with. He is accessible, considerate, and thoughtful and made the whole process pleasant. We cannot recommend him enough and we are grateful for his assistance.

Knowledgable and helpful

AP biology in my school is rough since we do not really have a structuralized way to prepare. Will helped me to develop strategies that are actually useful and helpful for studying. I highly recommend if you’re in need of a science tutor.

an amazing teacher, supper patient!

I’ve done three session with Will so far, and all of them have been phenomenal. Chemistry has never been my strong suit, so I knew I needed a tutor asap when I started taking general chemistry in college. Since studying with Will my quiz score has improved and so has my confidence in such a challenging subject! He is very patient, and will explain even the smallest things to me over and over again to make sure I have a deep understanding and don’t get confused when doing problems on my own. I highly recommend Will for anyone looking for a consistent Chem tutor!
