Hi, I'm John! I have an M.Sc. in Mathematics (earned with a Distinction) and top scores on the GMAT (770), GRE (170q/167v), and LSAT (175). I am also a Graduate Statistician of the Royal Statistical Society. I have been doing Math and Test Prep tutoring since 2011.

What I've found in the various fields I've studied and tutored is that almost everything becomes easier to understand once you have a concrete example in mind. If you're trying to figure out the relationships among speed, distance, and time, it helps to imagine an actual car trip. If you want to calculate probabilities of coin flips, you should consider some specific sequences of heads and tails. We learn through examples, describing and manipulating details as we advance our comprehension. It's a challenging process, but a very natural one.

Another important aspect of my tutoring style is flexibility. I adjust my explanations to your mental framework and build on what you already know. Often, a student understands 90% of a concept, and only needs help figuring out that last 10%. I try to give my students just enough guidance to complete their understanding, without needlessly overhauling their whole approach. Sometimes this means allowing you to do things in a nonstandard way, if that's what you're comfortable with. There are usually various approaches to a problem, and I can teach them all.

I know my methods work--I've been using them successfully for over a decade, primarily in one-on-one tutoring as a freelancer. I've helped struggling GMAT and LSAT students break 90th percentile. Students who thought they hated statistics have ended up at the top of their class. For me, the biggest reward is seeing how much confidence my students gain. I think most people are smarter than they realize, and I enjoy helping them discover that.

Let me know if you have any questions or requests. I look forward to hearing from you!

ACT Math

ACT Math

My intuitive, common-sense approach to standardized tests has helped numerous students earn top scores in both math and verbal. I emphasize understanding rather than memorization: Instead of just giving you rules and formulas to remember, I help you figure out why they make sense. I am also very adaptable and can make my explanations fit any learning style.
Actuarial Science

Actuarial Science

I have a strong actuarial science background, having passed the SOA's preliminary actuarial exams with very good scores. In particular, I received a perfect 10 on Exam P. I have years of experience helping students prepare for actuarial exams, as well as coursework pertaining to these exams (probability, stochastic processes, mathematical statistics, etc.).
Biostatistics

Biostatistics

I am a Graduate Statistician of the Royal Statistical Society and have many years of experience helping students succeed in statistics courses and exams. This includes plenty of tutoring in biostatistics, as well as epidemiology and related fields. I know how to effectively convey statistical ideas to people from biological backgrounds.
Calculus

Calculus

I can help students learn the techniques of calculus--differentiation, integration, series expansions--as well as the underlying theory (topics typically covered in a course on real analysis). I am an intuitive learner and work hard to pass those intuitions on to my students. I can also recommend some little-known calculus resources.
Chemistry

Chemistry

I got a 5 in AP Chemistry and served as the head high school chemistry tutor for two years. More recently, I am a mathematician and statistician who focuses on the interrelationships among mathematical and scientific disciplines. I am an expert in explaining quantitative chemistry concepts and can help with most introductory and some advanced courses.
Discrete Math

Discrete Math

Discrete math combines diverse topics, and I have mastered all of them through graduate coursework and self-study. These include logic, combinatorics, graph theory, and analysis of algorithms. Over the years, I have mentored many students to top scores in their discrete math classes--some have received nearly 100%.
Epidemiology

Epidemiology

I have several years of experience providing tutoring and consultation in epidemiology. This includes helping students understand the design of epidemiologic studies as well as guiding them through the mathematical analysis of results. I have provided assistance with both research projects and epidemiology courses. Previous students have ranged from undergraduates to current MDs.
Finite Math

Finite Math

Finite math, like discrete math, is a mix of many topics, and I have gained expertise in most of them through coursework and self-study. These include logic, sets and relations, number theory, permutations and combinations, probability, induction, and graphs and trees. Some of my students have gotten close to 100% in their finite/discrete math courses.
GMAT

GMAT

My intuitive, common-sense approach to the GMAT has helped numerous students score 700+ since 2011. I emphasize comprehension rather than memorization: Instead of just giving you formulas and rules to remember, I help you figure out why they make sense. I am also very adaptable and know how to make my explanations fit your learning style.
GRE

GRE

My intuitive, common-sense approach to the GRE has helped many of my students score 320+ since 2014. I emphasize understanding rather than memorization: Instead of just giving you rules and formulas to remember, I help you figure out why they make sense. I am also very adaptable and can make my explanations fit any learning style.
Logic

Logic

I scored a 175 on the LSAT and have been successfully tutoring students for this exam for nearly a decade. Formal logic is one of the biggest components of the LSAT. I also have many years of experience as a math tutor, helping students with coursework in probability and discrete math, both of which rely heavily on logic.
LSAT

LSAT

My intuitive, common-sense approach to the LSAT has been helping students get top scores since 2016. I emphasize comprehension rather than memorization: Instead of just giving you rules and procedures to remember, I help you figure out why they make sense. I am also very adaptable and know how to fit my explanations to any learning style.
Physics

Physics

In high school I got 5's on both AP Physics C exams (Mechanics and E&M). Today I hold an M.Sc. in Mathematics and have a strong background in mathematical physics as well as physics more generally. I enjoy finding useful analogies and building on diverse intuitive frameworks, allowing me to succeed with a wide variety of students. I can help you with most introductory and some advanced physics courses.
Probability

Probability

I am a Graduate Statistician of the Royal Statistical Society and have a strong probability background, often composing hard probability problems as a hobby. I emphasize comprehension rather than memorization and am good at coming up with useful, memorable examples. I can help with most undergraduate or master’s probability courses, as well as Actuarial Exam P.
Real Analysis

Real Analysis

I hold an MSc in Mathematics, earned with a Distinction, and know all about the challenges of mathematical rigor. If you have an intuition or mental picture but don't know how to put it into words, I can help. Seeing how basic logic ultimately leads to such concepts as differentiation and integration is a rewarding journey, and I look forward to serving as your guide!
SAT Math

SAT Math

My intuitive, common-sense approach to standardized tests has helped numerous students earn top scores in both math and verbal. I emphasize understanding rather than memorization: Instead of just giving you rules and formulas to remember, I help you figure out why they make sense. I am also very adaptable and can make my explanations fit any learning style.

Super knowledgeable and ready to help!

John is great! He sent me external resources to help me understand the material for my assignments even before meeting me, my professor doesn't provide a lot of good resources and having some material to help me grasp the concepts from different perspectives from was amazing. He definitely knows his stuff and is a great resource if you want to have a lot of in-depth knowledge and background on your assignments.

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

John helped me through the areas that I was failing to understand with a over-arching view of the stimulus and question pertaining to it. This allowed me to analyze scenario and come to a simple conclusion. I recommend him for students in a rush to assess their LSAT situation or those that need guidance from the beginning. Take Care John, thanks.

Awesome and super knowledgeable

John was amazing and super helpful with some difficult logic problems. He responded quickly and although I was not able to provide him with much background for my problems he was able to walk me through them very clearly. He was all very enthusiastic which made the material all the better.
