About Stephen

- 12+ years of tutoring experience
- helped over 200 students achieve perfect scores on standardized test sections
- worked with thousands of students in the past in improving grades and scores
- served as Dean at major test prep company in San Diego

I am an experienced and dedicated educator who has over 12 years of experience in teaching. What sets me apart from other tutors is that education is my passion and my profession, not just a hobby or supplemental job. I love to connect with students using humor and excitement; students are often surprised at how entertaining learning can be! I fully understand that students have unique learning styles and require support in different ways, but I believe success always comes from a strong work ethic and real knowledge of the concepts relevant to the subject that the student is learning.

My past experience includes serving as a Dean at an educational company that specialized in tutoring and test prep. I have worked with hundreds of students who made vast improvements in their grades at school and their scores on standardized tests, including over 200 students who achieved perfect scores on the SAT or ACT sections. The students that I have worked with in the past have been accepted into pretty much all of the most prestigious universities and colleges in the country!

I believe my ability in teaching is strengthened by the fact that I have developed mathematics and science curricula used in the various types of programs offered at competitive test prep companies. Recognizing the lack of quality test prep materials available to students, I focused on creating realistic SAT and ACT standardized tests by examining the content and format of released official tests from the past. It is this deeper level of knowledge of how the tests are constructed and meant to be presented that allows me to teach effectively and help a student to reach their full capability.

I have also served families by providing counseling and academic consulting. I particularly enjoy this role because I'm able to connect with families on a level different from that of teaching. I found that working with college-bound teens and their parents to be a fulfilling experience because I could positively guide them in their educational endeavors, understand their struggles and concerns, and ultimately help them to evade academic stresses.

I'm always eager to meet and work with new students of all types and in all stages in their academic paths. I hope to work with you soon!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I like to take these standardized tests myself every now and then to make sure I stay current with new changes and formats to the test. The last time I took an official ACT exam in December 2014, I received a perfect composite score of 36, including a 36 on both the Math and Science sections.

I have taught the ACT Math and Science sections for 8+ years in both classroom and one-on-one tutoring environments.

I have worked with several hundred students in preparing for the ACT, including many students who achieved perfect scores in the Math and Science sections.

Algebra 1

I have taught students in Algebra 1 in both small class and one-on-one environments. The students that I taught included those who were struggling and needed to catch up with their class, those who wanted to make sure they are on track and not fall behind with their current learning, and those who wanted to enrich their learning and advance in their skills past what is being taught in school.

As Algebra 1 topics appear on tests such as the ACT and SAT, it is important for students to have a strong understanding of these concepts.

Algebra 2

I have taught over a thousand students in both classroom and one-on-one environments, mostly in high school math subjects and standardized tests such as the SAT or ACT.

Geometry

I have taught over a thousand students in both classroom and one-on-one environments, mostly in middle and high school math subjects and standardized tests such as the SAT or ACT.

ISEE

I have taught the ISEE exam to many students who were applying for admission to private schools in the San Diego area. I am familiar with all three levels of the ISEE. The test can be difficult and overwhelming, as it often covers material that the student has not learned yet in their regular school classes. Managing time and reinforcing concepts are key to doing well on these exams.

Prealgebra

I have taught students in Prealgebra in both small class and one-on-one environments. The students that I taught included those who were struggling and needed to catch up with their class, those who wanted to make sure they are on track and not fall behind with their current learning, and those who wanted to enrich their learning and advance in their skills past what is being taught in school. Especially with the common core changes, it is crucial for students to develop strong foundations that they will have to keep building upon year after year.

Precalculus

I have taught over a thousand students in both classroom and one-on-one environments, mostly in high school math subjects and standardized tests such as the SAT or ACT.

PSAT

I have taught the PSAT and SAT Math sections for 8+ years in both classroom and one-on-one tutoring environments. In the past, I have also designed curriculum centered around the PSAT and SAT, including weekly lessons and mock tests, so I have a very strong knowledge of the format, style, and intentions of the exam. I have worked with over a thousand students in preparing for the PSAT and SAT, including over 200 students who achieved perfect scores in the Math section.

SAT Math

I have taught the SAT Math section for 8+ years in both classroom and one-on-one tutoring environments. In the past, I have also designed curriculum centered around the SAT, including weekly lessons and mock tests, so I have a very strong knowledge of the format, style, and intentions of the exam.

I have worked with over a thousand students in preparing for the SAT, including over 200 students who achieved perfect scores in the Math section.

Trigonometry

I have worked with well over a thousand students in the past several years, and have taught Trig subjects in both a classroom and one-on-one environment.

Outstanding skills

Stephen, is quite courteous and accommodating. Very knowledgeable of the material covered. Our daughter said by the end of the lesson she was relieved and prepped for her test to help her get into her next level of math Algebra 2. We'll definitely be looking forward to working with him in the future. Mahalo Stephen.
