About Dolores

As an educator, I have had over 30 years of teaching elementary grades, training teachers, designing reading curriculum and directing a major school district's reading program. In addition, I have written over 30 reading books and teacher's manuals for grades K-6.

In tutoring children I diagnose their needs and design lessons so each child will improve their reading skills and achieve their full potential.

I also provide multiple opportunities for children to master their skills in phonics, vocabulary, comprehension, grammar, and writing.

My lessons include practice pages for students to use between lessons.

As and elementary school teacher I also provided private after school tutoring lessons so students could accomplish all the skills for their grade level. I also trained other teachers on techniques for providing private tutoring lessons. After receiving my Master's degree, in reading specialization. I was hired to conduct teacher's training workshops around the country for teacher's utilizing a new reading series in grades k-6..

In my evaluation of each individual student's needs I diagnose phonics, grammar and comprehension skills. Then I design material to help them learn. I get to know the student's academic needs and adjust the lessons so they can achieve success. Over the years I have designed programs and written textbooks and workbooks that I have used to help children succeed.

My love is to tutor children on a one-to-one basis with the goal to have them succeed in school. I continue to write educational materials for two publishing companies. A list of my published reading textbooks for teachers and children are available upon request. I look forward to hearing from you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I taught in elementary school for many years and then was selected to provide training programs to teachers around the U.S. for school districts that had adopted certain reading series programs for grades 1 to 6. In so doing, I was offered a new position as Director of Reading K-12 for the Houston Independent School District. I created the curriculum, hired staff, helped develop Reading Certification Program for the state of Texas and established reading labs for 230 schools. I am the author of over 30 reading textbooks which include Teacher's manuals, student readers and workbooks.

Grammar

As an elementary school teacher I have taught reading, grammar, writing, speaking, vocabulary, comprehension and listening skills to elementary grade children. These skills are the foundation for a students’ future success in all school subjects. As Director Of Reading K-12 for the Houston Independent School District I designed curriculum and trained teachers in how to instruct children in these basic skills. I have also authored published textbooks and activity books for elementary grade levels.

Handwriting

I attended Catholic elementary and high school where handwriting was an important subject. As an elementary teacher I also taught handwriting. Throughout my adulthood I have always had complements about my handwriting. Handwriting lessons are included with each subject taught so my students can submit completed essays, book reports etc. in a readable format.

Phonics

I have taught phonics in elementary school, conducted teacher workshops and written Phonics workbooks that have been published and used in schools nationwide.

Reading

Reading instruction includes the five critical components of reading: Phonological Awareness, Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary, and Comprehension. I have also authored teacher and student reading materials from grades K to 6. Reading materials for each individual lesson.
