About Claire

Bio

I graduated in 2013 with a double BA in Mathematics and Psychology from Swarthmore College, where I was employed by the math department as a tutor, TA, and grader. I recently completed my Masters of Science in Analytics at USF.

I was a Program Assistant/Teaching Assistant with the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth for math at the 5th and 6th grade levels in the summers of '12 and '13.

I have extensive math tutoring experience across the board, both as a freelancer and with a learning center--early elementary through differential equations, and everything in between, as well as ISEE and SAT/ACT. If you provide the materials, I can help you work through them!

I have a serious passion for finding the connections between concepts--treating math problems like puzzles instead of chores. If you're stuck on thinking that you are just "not a math person," I'm your girl! My specialty is utilizing right-brain thinking instead of rote memorization so that my students can extend their learning beyond the requirements of a given assignment or test and into their long-term education.

My subjects include: ACT, SAT, SAT II Math, Calculus, Pre-Calculus, Algebra, Pre-Algebra, Geometry, Linear Algebra, and ISEE.

ISEE

ISEE

I spent about a year working at an independent learning center where the majority of my students were preparing for the ISEE. I worked with students in all three levels of the test. We covered the full range of topics--general test-taking strategy and its applications to reading comprehension and word problems, using word roots and context clues when working with unfamiliar vocabulary, full survey math skill reviews, and how to quickly prepare a 5-paragraph essay. I also took the ISEE myself in the 6th grade as part of the admissions process to Bishop's, so I'm familiar with what it's like to take this test from the other side of the process.

Linear Algebra

After being accepted into and completing the Honors First Year Seminar in Linear Algebra at Swarthmore College, I went on to work in the college's math department in the subject. I completed two semesters as a linear algebra teaching assistant, which entailed auditing the lectures and running weekly 2-hour problem session. My tutoring with the department also included further one-on-one work with linear algebra students.
