I am a recent graduate of Stanford University with a BA in Human Biology and a minor in Spanish. I also graduated from Tulane University School of Medicine with a MS in Microbiology & Immunology. Currently I am a doctoral student at the University of California San Diego. I absolutely love learning and believe that education holds the keys to success in life.

Through my education, I have taken a variety of courses (especially science) and am able to be a great help to students in need! As a student who has overcome dyslexia, I can provide valuable insight and understanding for students struggling with various learning disabilities. I understand that each person learns differently and any subject can be conquered with the right strategies and encouragement. I am ready and willing to adapt to the needs of each student and help him/her to reach specific goals.

I've been tutoring over 15 years and have great experience working with the Center for Teaching and Learning at Stanford University and with Cardinal Education in Palo Alto, CA. I have also worked as an assistant middle school teacher in Mountain View, CA.

Growing up in Southern California, near the US-Mexico border, exposed me to Spanish and the Spanish speaking culture at an early age. I began learning Spanish as a child and continued formally studying the language up to the university level at Stanford. I’ve lived in Madrid, Spain and am fully fluent in Spanish to provide both classroom and conversational assistance. I have a unique perspective since I am not a native speaker, yet I’ve been around Spanish all of my life.

I look forward to speaking with you and working together to reach academic success! I am able to tutor students of all ages and levels.

Career Development

Career Development

At Stanford University I worked at the Center for Teaching and Learning and spent a considerable amount of time at the Career Development Center. In addition to tutoring, my duties included assisting students to find their chosen career path based on their talents, hobbies and skills. I also worked as a peer mentor at Stanford University. As part of my job, I assisted students with class mentoring, résumé building and provided guidance in choosing a college major and future career. I've been exposed to numerous fields and can help you take the correct steps in finding the career of your dreams.
College Counseling

College Counseling

I served as a peer mentor at Stanford for two years and mentored several high school students. If you're a college student in need of help to plan your course schedule or need advice navigating through the system I'd love to help! If you're in high school preparing for college or in college preparing for professional school, I have a surplus of experience to be of assistance. In 2007 I was admitted to all undergraduate schools that I applied to including Ivy League Universities and the top 10 undergraduate colleges in the US. I'm an expert at the application process and can help you create a fantastic admissions package. I've worked with several students and helped them to reach their dream schools for both undergraduate and graduate education.
Dyslexia

Dyslexia

As a college student at Stanford, I was diagnosed with dyslexia. To overcome this learning disability I went through extensive neuropsychological training at both the University of California, San Diego and Stanford University to learn the brain process of dyslexia and how to beat this challenge. Since l have learned how to navigate through this learning disability, I have become an advocate for the condition and thoroughly enjoy tutoring students and helping them to overcome it as I did. I have years of tutoring experience both working for Stanford University and Cardinal Education (Palo Alto, CA) assisting students with learning disabilities and specifically dyslexia. Being dyslexic does not put a student at a disadvantage, it only means the student thinks and experiences learning in a different way. Once a student is able to find the correct strategies for their particular situation, they can achieve great success. I graduated from both Stanford University and Tulane University with a very strong academic record and am definitely qualified to help a student struggling with dyslexia. I have specific note taking strategies, reading tips and study methods that have proven to improve grades in all subjects. As the saying goes, "It take one to know one" and being a dyslexic students places me in a unique position to relate to another dyslexic student and make a break through in their education.

Genetics is one of my favorite subjects! As a Human Biology major at Stanford I studied many aspects of genetics and am excited to help you learn the aspects of this interesting field. I completed all of my genetics courses at the top of my class and was able to assist other students in the laboratory. I am thoroughly familiar with analyzing genotypes and phenotypes and I also worked at Stanford University studying the genetics of a neurodegenerative disease. At Stanford I excelled at both lab experiments and classroom lectures featuring genetics. If you need help with natural selection and evolution, Mendelian and classical genetics, molecular genetics, inheritance, DNA and chromosomes, reproduction, genetic code or anything else feel free to contact me!

Public Speaking

Public Speaking

While at Stanford University I took years of public speaking training. I have won two regional prizes in public speaking and speech writing with Jack and Jill of America, Inc., a renown national organization supporting academic achievement. I've also been instructed by members of the Spokesman Club and learned the art of stirring people to action with speeches. Public Speaking comes natural to me and assists greatly with interview training, which I am also experienced in tutoring.
Sociology

Sociology

As a Human Biology major in college, half of my core curriculum was sociology based and my concentration places an emphasis on humanity and human behaviors. I've taken many courses in sociology and received A's. I'm experienced in the different aspects of this field and am able to help with conceptual understanding or provide guidance on specific assignments. All of my students whom I've tutored in sociology finished their courses with exceptional grades.
Special Needs

Special Needs

Since 2004 I've been an active member of Best Buddies International, a nonprofit organization consisting of volunteers that attempt to create opportunities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. As a Best Buddy member I've spent years mentoring and creating a long lasting bond with special needs students in Southern and Northern California. With Best Buddies, I've participated with cooking activities, marathon walking and completing homework. I'm accustomed to working with special needs students and enjoy spending time with them. Through my experience I have assisted special needs students with classroom education, schoolwork and life/home skill development. I'm a very caring and considerate person with patience and understanding to be of great assistance. One of my close family members has special needs and I've assisted with mainstreaming him within the community. This has taught me the empathy and understanding needed to be a great tutor. The mind of a special needs individual is amazing and I enjoy not only teaching them, but learning from them as well.
Study Skills

Study Skills

While at Stanford I worked with the Center for Teaching and Learning and specifically tutored students to improve their study skills and academic habits. As a learning specialist, I worked one-on-one with several students to assist in providing the tools to become a better student and comprehend course material. After graduating from Stanford, I worked with Cardinal Education (Palo Alto, CA) where I helped several students specifically with study skill improvement. All of my students have improved their grades by at least one letter grade. I know several strategies in note taking (through reading and lectures), textbook reading, homework strategies and general academic support to be of great help to students.

Insightful and patient, tutor- Received an A+ with her help!

I contacted Briana for help with my medical sociology papers. She was very responsive and we were quickly able to set up plan. She reviewed my paper and provided extremely detailed notes, giving me guiding points that allowed me to focus my paper. She helped me figure out the main idea of my paper and how to better organize my thoughts around my central topic. Briana also did a fantastic job of making suggesting as to where I needed to be more clear or focused. Working with Briana was easy and helped me produce a quality A+ paper. I will definitely have Briana help me on all of my papers and know that with her help I will be able to submit my best work!

Patient and Knowledgeable Tutor

My 9yr. old son, who's dyslexic, just started with Briana 2 weeks ago for math, reading, writing and phonics. I'm very pleased with her patience and approach. She's already taught my son useful 'tricks' and techniques for learning multiplication. My son has also expressed his happiness with Briana. Seems to be a good fit and we'll be continuing with Briana, whom I highly recommend.

Knowledgeable and patient tutor.

Briana assisted me with biology, and she made complex topics much easier to understand. She explained concepts clearly, was always patient with my questions, and ensured I fully grasped the material before moving on. I felt more confident in class, and my grades improved thanks to her support. I am truly grateful for her help and would highly recommend her to anyone in need of an excellent tutor!

An Invaluable experience

I have truly enjoyed my tutoring sessions with Briana. In addition to being extremely knowledge, Briana is patient and kind. She has a way of simplifying complex material making it easier to digest and understand. Briana has tremendously helped me with my understanding of course material and has validated my frustrations with institutional teaching.

Awesome tutor!

On the first day of meeting my child Briana was able to assess him and understand his learning style right away. My son loves her! She's professional, caring, and very good at what she does. Since tutoring with Briana my son has more confidence when it comes to reading and is more enthusiastic about sounding out words and reading things he's never read before! I can't wait to see how far he comes with our continuing sessions.

Wonderful Tutor

I failed my ASVAB test 3 times to get into the army. My first score was a 28, then a 29, my third time testing was a 30! I really needed a tutor to help me pass with a score between 50 through a 60! Briana was such an excellent, patient, caring, and hardworking tutor. She helped me for 6 months pushing me to the limit. Briana installed more clear information in my mind better than most teachers I had in high school. She breaks down every problem step by step with such ease. I would say 95% of the time I understood the problem the first time. I've recently took my test for the ASVAB had scored a 57 on my AVAB!!! I really appreciate Briana for her patient hard work. I recommend Briana as the best tutor or teacher for anyone. She's absolutely superb at what she does!!!

great tutor

Briana is very professional, on time, and knowledgeable. She helped my daughter catch up in precal after missing quite a few days of school. She corresponded with me via email and also with her teacher at school to make sure she had the right material to best utilize the time and prepare her for a future test. This was my first experience using WyzAnt so I wasn't sure what to expect. I must say it was a sigh of relief after trying other tutors. I definitely recommend Briana.
