About Stacey

Hello! I am a warm, friendly person who was born to teach! I work well with students of all ages and have been teaching/tutoring for over 12 years. I love language, and when you work with me, you'll see that I am passionate about sharing that excitement with you. One of the reasons I enjoy teaching privately is that I relish the chance to tailor our sessions to your needs. We are partners in your learning process, and as I get to know you better, I refine the sessions to target your unique difficulties, in your preferred learning style. We will work together to figure out which tools and methods work best in helping you achieve your goals. My specialties: I am a great writer and editor, which means I insist on quality work, and I know what teachers look for in writing assignments. I'm a strong reader, and I can help you improve your reading skills, no matter how old you are!
As a native speaker of English who learned fluent Spanish without living abroad, I am in a unique position to assist English speakers who need to improve their Spanish skills. My strength in Spanish grammar comes directly from my strength in English grammar. All of those Spanish vocabulary words also allow me to explain English SAT vocabulary in terms of its Latin and Greek roots, which comes in handy for memorizing.

I look forward to working with you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Reading

I am a proven reading comprehension tutor, and my strategies (if followed properly!) are guaranteed to raise test scores. I show students how to read the content for each different type of reading passage on the ACT. People often ask me what the difference is between the ACT and the SAT, and here is what I tell them: The SAT assesses whether the student can read and comprehend at the high school level; the ACT uses passages from college textbooks, thereby assessing whether or not the student will be able to read and comprehend at the college level.

I have different strategies for each of the different reading passages: scientific, historical, and literary. They cannot be handled the same way!

Study Skills

Do you feel overwhelmed when it comes to studying for tests and exams? That's because most schools do not teach students how to study. At my school, however, "learning how to learn" was a skill my teachers gave me, and now I can give it to you! I can help you develop a plan of attack that will be successful, no matter the subject. I can teach you how to become an "A" student with proven study techniques that will help you remember vital information during test time. You'll learn the benefits of studying for a short time each day leading up to the exam, rather than "cramming" the night before the test. If, however, you do end up with only a day to study, I can help you discover which methods will help you absorb the material most quickly and effectively, based upon your individual learning style. Learn the study skills that will make your life easier - even after you've graduated from school. You'll be glad you did.

Voice (Music)

With my Master's degree in voice from San Francisc Conservatory of Music and my 7 years of private teaching, I am fully qualified to train voice students of different ages, levels of skill and musical backgrounds. I only ask that my voice students be at least 10 years of age.
