Hello, I'm Sean!

I teach first-year college students writing intensive courses in American studies, pop culture, and social issues. I have nine years of teaching at the college level. I am deeply invested in student-centered pedagogy, including the Harkness method, think-pair-share learning, and small-group instruction. My educational background includes a PhD in Literary Studies, a AM in Cultural Studies, and a BA in Political Science and Critical Gender Studies. I am comfortable teaching in the fields of English, Literature, American Studies, Social Studies, and U.S. History.

I was drawn to academia and education through my own journey and the mentorship and intellectual generosity of the exceptional faculty members from whom I had the privilege to learn. As such, I enjoy working with students throughout their educational journeys, which can be a transformative experience that shapes both their academic and professional trajectories. I take great joy in seeing my students critically think, ask difficulty questions, make connections between course material, and problem solve.
I recognize that not every student learns the same way, so understanding how to develop lesson plans, incorporate mixed media, and utilize handouts and worksheets, is one way I account for diversity in learning.

I also work closely with students and families navigating competitive college admissions, including interview preparation and the development of compelling college application essays.

I am easy to reach and will respond to each inquiry. Feel free to reach out with any questions or to schedule some academic support!

As an Admissions Ambassador, I am responsible for conducting interviews to applicants to Dartmouth College. Since September 2017, I have been one of the top interviewers in terms of number of reports submitted to Dartmouth Admissions every year, interviewing both early decision (ED) and regular decision (RD) high school applicants in San Diego County, Orange County, Los Angeles County, Riverside County, and Santa Clara County as needed. My interviews and the reports that I have submitted on behalf of the applicants I interview have yielded high admission rates. Serving as an Ivy League alumni interviewer has provided me with substantial insight into the admissions process, including the types of questions students are asked, the qualities admissions committees value most highly, and the ways applicants can most effectively communicate their intellectual curiosity, character, and personal experiences. This experience has strengthened my ability to help students craft thoughtful and compelling personal statements, prepare strategically for interviews, and present themselves with confidence and authenticity throughout the admissions process. It has also given me a nuanced understanding of how selective institutions evaluate applicants beyond grades and test scores, including their capacity for reflection, engagement, leadership, and contribution to a broader academic community. In addition to conducting college interview preparation, I have also consulted with families navigating the private school admissions process in both New York City and San Diego. My work has included helping parents and students prepare for interviews, develop thoughtful and compelling personal statements, and navigate conversations surrounding school culture, academic philosophy, course offerings, extracurricular opportunities, and other key aspects of the admissions process. I have worked closely with families to ensure that students present themselves authentically and confidently while also helping parents better understand how to engage
