I always tell students that no one can simply watch LeBron James play basketball on TV and then be able to play like LeBron James. Realistically, one would have to actually get out onto the basketball court and try to shoot hoops. Even so, the first time a person goes to shoot hoops, they will miss A LOT of shots. This analogy translates directly to math.
We cannot learn math by simply watching someone else do it; we need to get our hands dirty and actually DO math ourselves. Additionally, the first time we try something new in math, we will make A LOT of mistakes. However, it is only by trying that we will ever get better -- just like basketball!
