Hello! I'm Dr Paul, and I've been teaching and tutoring English for over thirty years. In fact, it was my main job as an English major during college. After graduating from the University of Texas at Austin with a BA in English and Psychology, I moved to Seoul, Korea for two years where I taught English and writing to K-12 students and adults. I returned to Austin to work on my master’s and doctoral degrees at UT Austin.
During my first two years there, I worked as a writing tutor in the writing center and taught English literature to first-year students.

Towards the end of my doctoral studies, I worked as an Instructor at UT Austin, teaching my own class that I designed. I also tutored high school students in writing and English literature during the summers. In 2003, I moved to South Bend, IN where I tutored Korean American middle school and high school students one-on-one, while assisting seminarians at Notre Dame with revising their sermons. I also taught first-year composition to students at Notre Dame.

In 2006, I moved to San Diego, CA to begin my tenure-track job as an Assistant Professor at San Diego State University, where I taught Rhetoric and Writing Studies courses to undergraduate and graduate students until 2020. While teaching at SDSU I won Pi Beta Phi's “Professor of the Year” award three times and the Teaching Excellence Award. During the summers, I also continued tutoring Korean American students one-on-one. In 2023, I began teaching first-year writing to students at Point Loma Nazarene University (where I currently teach). Teaching and mentoring have always been passions of mine, and I'm excited to help you achieve your academic and personal goals!

English

I have a PhD in English, with an emphasis in Rhetoric and Writing Studies, from the University of Texas at Austin. I am currently an English professor at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego, where I teach first-year and senior-level courses. I have taught and tutored English for 30 years, including two years in Seoul, Korea.
Essay Writing

Essay Writing

As a Rhetoric and Writing Studies professor, all of my classes teach students how to create original theses, construct compelling arguments, and find credible sources to support their arguments. My courses focus heavily on critical thinking, the most important skill necessary to write persuasive essays. In addition, I teach basic and advanced concepts of rhetorical theory (ethos, pathos, and logos), which all universities require students to master during their first two years.
Personal Statements

Personal Statements

During my 30 years of teaching college students, I have assigned, evaluated, and taught students how to write personal statements. I have also served on college admissions committees where I read and evaluated personal statements written by students applying for scholarships.
Public Speaking

Public Speaking

My public speaking experiences date back to middle school when I began competing in speech contests, and that continued in high school where I served as a member of the speech team and delivered motivational speeches to local schools. For the last 30 years I've been teaching my own classes at universities, while also delivering speeches, conference keynote addresses, sermons at church, and workshop trainings. I've also taught students and mentees how to prepare for and deliver compelling public speeches.
Tennis

Tennis

I have played competitive tennis for over 30 years. I compete in USTA (United States Tennis Association) leagues at the 4.0 level and have made it to the national championship twice in the last two years. I currently coach beginners and intermediate players.
Thesis Writing

Thesis Writing

Fun fact: "theses" is the plural form of "thesis." During grad school (master's and PhD) I worked as a writing tutor at the University of Texas's writing center, where my primary task was teaching students how to formulate a thesis. I also worked with master's students who were writing theses for their degrees. As a university professor, I served on master's thesis committees, where I guided grad students from outlines to completed theses.

Great support!

Dr. Paul helped me on my essays a lot! It was great that we spent time discussing my intentions with the prompts before going into them directly. This helped with generating ideas. Overall, I think Dr. Paul helped with making the best of my essays :)
