With over 30 years of experience as a credentialed teacher in general and special education, I specialize in helping students in grades 2–6 strengthen reading, writing, spelling, and overall literacy skills. I provide structured, explicit instruction tailored to each student’s strengths and needs.

I am also a trained reading assessor and offer individualized reading, writing, and spelling assessments through Instant Book. Following the assessment, parents receive a brief written summary of their child’s strengths, areas of need, and recommended instructional priorities. Families may also schedule customized follow-up lessons, as availability allows, targeting skills identified during the assessment.

Instant Book sessions are also available for grades 2–6 students who need as-needed support with school assignments, including reading comprehension, written responses, essays, and other ELA coursework.

As a special education teacher and intervention specialist, I have worked with students in K–8 public, private, and specialized school settings, as well as in one-on-one tutoring and homeschool environments. My experience includes students with dyslexia, ADHD, autism, and other learning differences.

I am highly trained in the Wilson Reading System, an Orton-Gillingham–based approach that develops phonics, decoding, fluency, spelling, and comprehension. I adapt instruction using clear routines, visual supports, multisensory practice, and carefully scaffolded lessons.

I am also a credentialed math teacher with experience supporting elementary students in foundational skills, computation, and problem solving.

I hold a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Fordham University, a master’s degree in education from Seton Hall University, and a master’s degree in special education from UC San Diego. My goal is to provide targeted instruction that builds skills, confidence, and greater independence.

For students in 2nd grade and above, I begin by conducting a spelling inventory assessment to identify each student's specific spelling needs. From there, I focus on spelling first single words and then multisyllabic words, breaking them down one syllable at a time, identifying vowels, prefixes, and suffixes, and reinforcing these patterns through structured practice. I extend these skills into written expression, guiding students to develop short, constructed responses to prompts, which helps them apply new spelling words in meaningful ways. For younger spellers, I teach foundational skills like identifying short and long vowels and blending these sounds into written form. I help students transfer these early spelling skills into sentences and short passages, building confidence as they apply their knowledge to more complex writing tasks.

Great teacher and engaging class!

We started tutoring with Ms. Allison offline. After getting used to the routine, we added online sessions as well. Ms. Allison has done a great job keeping both sessions engaging, using lots of tools and games for a 5.5 year old boy. My son loves her classes, and I’ve seen great improvement in his phonics.
