I want my students to develop confidence in their own minds, their own understanding of the world around them and their own ability to think about problems and solve them. Difficult jargon and complicated language often stand in the way of learning so I strive to explain things as simply as possible. Good communication is bidirectional. If a student is struggling with something, I listen with an open mind to pinpoint exactly where the problems lie. The objective is for my students to think and communicate their thoughts clearly and develop a concrete understanding of their subject matter.
I hold a PhD in Cell Biology from UCSF and a Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry from the University of Iowa. In addition to advanced Biochemistry and Cell Biology coursework, I have also received A grades in Calculus (including multivariable), Differential Equations, Linear Algebra, Calculus-based Physics, General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry and Physical Chemistry.
I have tutored middle school students in algebra and physics. I have also taught biology, genetics, biochemistry and cell biology to high school students individually and in small groups. I was a teaching assistant for a graduate-level Biochemistry course at UCSF (for which I won a teaching award) as well as an undergraduate Anatomy course.
