Thank you for the opportunity to provide an introductory brief on Wyzant. As a life long learner, practitioner and career instructor, my interest in tutoring is complimented by over thirty years of coordinating, planning and assessing Graduate and Undergraduate architectural curriculum. Professorships held at the NewSchool of Architecture and Design in San Diego, California and Washington State University in Pullman Washington developed into an expertise in Sustainable Design, Project Management, Drawing and Construction while jointly maintaining a professional architectural practice.

Both in the Academy and Practice my management of small or large groups accommodated an environment where the voice of all participates were heard. For example, the culture in the Design Studio is structured to focus individually on the designer's potential. The structured Studio is to identify the problem, provide a thesis, research, discover and apply new knowledge in approaching the problem, with one on one personal assessment through reviews, progress, analysis and feedback.

With national registration certified by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB), and appointments by the American Institute of Architects (AIA) has resulted in national appointments to Energy, Practice, Education, and Development programs impacting national AIA policies.
I trust that my assistance as a tutor and colleague will help my students discover one's potential and prosper in chosen areas of interest.

Thank you,

Don

Architecture

Architecture

As a Professor of Architecture and Program Coordinator of Graduate and Undergraduate Design Studios, responsibilities included the management of 4 to 5 Adjunct Design Instructors. Serving as studio and program coordinator responsibilities included enrollment consideration and portfolio review in the selection of applicants seeking program advancement. The curriculum emphasis at all studio levels revolved around the design process methodologies and evidence based decision making. Extensive research in professional practice, environmental design, solar technology, daylighting and the documentation of multi-story residential and office building construction means and methods served as valuable resources for in class discovery and application of new knowledge. As an educator and practicing architect while teaching, my professional experience brought valuable and current pragmatic issues to the fore- front in lively debate and discussion.
Drawing

Drawing

As a Design Instructor and Architect Practitioner, drawing in the form of freehand was a professional standard in quickly exploring concepts and ideas. However, computer drawing (CAD) has become somewhat of a replacement of freehand to a certain degree, and unfortunately CAD is not my expertise. Rather my interest is in informative drawing systems such as projection, multiview, paraline and perspective drawings in communicating design ideas. One method of interest is sketching and drafting in pencil by hand. I have taught the drawing of freehand and mechanical subjects in the form of interior and exterior character perspectives, as well as drafting building sections, elevations and refined construction details. Drawing graphic construction documents, in the form of Working Drawings with supporting details and specifications, challenges one's ability to communicate an understanding of the scope of work and quality that brings a building to fruition. In addition to expressing architectural form, context and imagery by diagramming, I also approach boat sketching with the emphasis on proportion and scale in proper perspective through analytical drawing. In addition to communicating expressing oneself, the act of drawing facilitates subject retention: " you draw, you remember" !
Project Management

Project Management

My experience in teaching Project Management has been at the University level, teaching architectural professional practice procedures for over 35 years. As a registered architect, with a Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Architecture, certifications have been granted by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB), Certified Construction Contract Administrator (CCCA) and CSI Construction Document Technologist (CDT). Students in my classes were very interested in the logistics of Contract Administration and Client Representative roles such as: aiding the Owner in Architect selection and contract negotiations, site observation and managing fund control in complex projects within a prescribed budget. Learning involved team building by structuring small seminar groups investigating the development of the Project Program, the Scope of Work and Delivery Method options, while reviewing possible AIA proposed Instruments of Service. These instruments, in the form of AIA documents, were introduced as application exercises describing the responsibility of the Architect, Owner and Contractor as parties within the Project Management process.
