About Timothy

Hello,

My name is Dr. J. I am a retired teacher with 30+ years of teaching experience in the classroom and more through individual tutoring. I worked mainly in alternative programs with students from kindergarten age through high school who had emotional/behavioral issues. Most of them also had learning disabilities. I enjoyed the small class size and the challenge of individualizing instruction for each student. My philosophy is that learning should be fun and engaging and ideally self-driven.

I was NJ certified as an English teacher (7-12) and a special education teacher (teacher of the handicapped) K-12. I have a BA in secondary English education, and an M.Ed. and an Ed.D. in educational leadership. I was Highly Qualified to teach elementary and high school English, math, science and social studies, and I have experience teaching them all.

I have my own transportation, am a non-smoker, an animal lover, and I am highly reliable. I am interested in discussing any proposed tutoring job with the object of ensuring a good fit for all concerned.

Timothy replied on 8/18/2015

Debbi, thank you for your second review noting the follow up I did for your nephew. We were both disappointed in the initial tutoring session when I did not get an accurate read on his academic levels. It turns out that your nephew was not invested in the process and did not enable either of us to accurately assess his skills. I am sorry that this worked as it did, but I believe we agree that your nephew is in control of the process at the moment. I wish you both the best.

"Wish I'd known about "Dr. J" sooner!!!"

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have been certified as a high school English teacher since the 1970's and have taught many other subjects as well, including math, in my career. I have experience tutoring and teaching test prep in math and English, writing, reading and science. I think I could help your student be successful.

ACT Math

I have tutored students preparing for high stakes testing for many years, and the specific area of focus has most often been math, reflecting the section where many high school students have the least confidence in their abilities. I enjoy math and have taught it in the classroom - as well as tutored math students - many times over the last 30 years.

ADHD

I have been permanently certified since January 1986 in K-12 English in my previous state of New Jersey. I have also been permanently certified as Teacher of the Handicapped [Special Needs Inclusive] since July of 1988. I taught Emotionally Disturbed/Behaviorally Handicapped as well as Learning Disabled students, in both private school and public school settings. A large percentage of the students I taught had ADD/ADHD as a medical diagnosis. I received continual training in teaching these students over more 30+ years of teaching.

Algebra 1

I have taught Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 over 30 years. Most importantly, I really like it! It can be fun.

Algebra 2

I have taught all major subjects for 30 + years as a special education teacher. My favorite area is math, and I find many students for whom math is very difficult and often overwhelming. I have exclusively been tutoring since my retirement, and Algebra and Geometry are the subjects for which I find my services have the largest demand. I enjoy Algebra and especially enjoy helping students see their way to success. Algebra 2 is demanding for those who find math feels like an unknown foreign language. I feel happy when I can make students relax a bit and find the short cuts that can make math fun!

Art History

I have been enthralled with art for over 50 years, and have learned art history from books, museums, and classes. I am an experienced teacher and tutor, and I love sharing my enthusiasm, knowledge of and interest in art history.

ASVAB

In my career as a Special Education teacher, working with high school aged and young adults, I have helped students prepare for the ASVAB on numerous occasions. I have taught students in school settings and in private tutoring. I think I am a helpful educator in preparing students for high stakes testing. Please review my profile to learn a little more about my history.
Dr. J.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

I first worked with Autistic students as a research assistant on a UCSB project about language in autistic subjects in 1965. I then worked with autistic patients at Metropolitan State Hospital in Waltham Mass. in 1966. I began working in education with autistic students in San Francisco in 1968 at a private school.
I have been permanently certified since January 1986 in K-12 English in my previous state of New Jersey and I have also been permanently certified as Teacher of the Handicapped [Special Needs Inclusive] since July of 1988. I taught Emotionally Disturbed/Behaviorally Handicapped as well as Learning Disabled students, in both private school and public school settings. A large percentage of the students I taught had ADD/ADHD as a medical diagnosis. I also taught and worked with students with Aspergers disorders and of course, continued with autistic students. I have been following NIH reports on research about autism on a weekly basis for the last three years and have received specialized training in teaching these students over more than 30+ years of teaching.

COOP/HSPT

In my many years of teaching Special Education students at the high school level, I have had numerous occasions to prepare students for the HSPT testing. I have experience administering the tests, have been involved in feedback on design panels in NJ, and have proctored these exams since they were first initiated. I have worked with private clients to tutor in this area as well. I have used training manuals repeatedly with my classes of students and with tutees.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have two New Jersey Certifications for K-12 initially earned in the 1980s. Since then I have taught elementary students in Elementary Science, English, Math, Social Studies, Reading, Grammar, and associated courses in a school setting and through individual 1-1 tutoring. I have taught both younger students with Special Needs (exceptionalities ) and those not classified as Special Education students. It is always a pleasure.

Elementary Math

As a Special Education teacher, my training and certification was for K-12. While I was working in private and public school settings, my focus was on Middle School through High School students. However, as a tutor for over 50 years, I have worked consistently with younger students as well. My primary focus as a tutor has been math, and the age range of my students goes from 1st grade through adults. I am very aware of the lack of confidence many students have in their math skills and the fact that they often dread math. I strive to share my enjoyment of math and to reintroduce students to math with support for their more challenging math processes..

English

I have been permanently certified since January 1986 in K-12 English in my previous state of New Jersey. I have also been permanently certified as Teacher of the Handicapped [Special Needs Inclusive] since July of 1988. I taught Emotionally Disturbed/Behaviorally Handicapped as well as Learning Disabled students, in both private school and public school settings. A large percentage of the students I taught had AD/ADHD as a medical diagnosis. I received continual training in teaching these students over 30+ years of teaching. I have also worked with special needs populations in inpatient and outpatient mental health settings, and in rehabilitation settings. Additionally, I have tutored special needs students since the 1960's.

Film

I have been a film buff all my life. I have also taken courses and attended seminars about American and international film. I am fluent teaching film history and film's relationship to other arts. I understand technical and financial issues in film, and am well prepared to teach about Film to students from ninth grade through college.

GED

I have taught high school math, science, English, history, and various associated independent studies. I also have years of teaching at risk students who have been unable to complete their high school requirements and therefore turn to the GED.

Geometry

I have taught math in both private and public school settings since the 1970's. I have also tutored many students in high school math areas of concentration. Throughout this experience of math instruction, I have often taught Geometry.

Research suggests that Geometry is often a real challenge for many students, even those who do well in other math courses. My experience was largely teaching disinterested and frustrated learners, and I believe the learning can become interesting and even fun.

I feel I could very likely help your son or daughter!

GRE

I have taken the GRE successfully a number of times, and tutored many students to help them prepare for taking it. My students have had good results, and I feel I can assure you that if we were to work together you would find me an extremely competent tutor, assuming we have a good fit and are comfortable working together.

Macintosh

I have been a consistent Mac user since the 1970's. At my first post-college position at a school, after a few years, I became the computer specialist for the school, using a lab of Macs. I have used a Macintosh in work settings, even when the business office of the school used IBM computers. At a later time in my school setting, I became the keeper of report cards, generating them on Macintoshes, designing them and keeping all records. For nearly 10 years, I created class lists, information on students lists and numerous other forms and records for the school on Macs.

Prealgebra

I taught pre-algebra for many years when it was a high school freshman course. I have also been a tutor in the subject many times, often with junior high students. I think it is a good opportunity to make math exciting, which is even more demanding for girls than boys in our culture. I would love to work with you all.

Reading

In my nearly 50 years of teaching, I have often worked with children who struggle with reading comprehension. My mother was a children's librarian who taught me a great deal about the excitement and adventure of reading. Her job involved encouraging reading skills and bringing reading to life. I have had great success in helping students of various ages improve their reading skills, improve comprehension, and improve interest in reading.

SAT Reading

I have many years of preparing students to take high stakes exams like the SAT. My years of teaching all major high school courses and tutoring in them as well, have prepared me to be a good person to help test takers achieve success.

Social Studies

As a Special Education teacher over the past 30 years, I have taught social studies at both elementary and secondary levels. I have also taught world history, us history, and geography among other related curricula. I have tutored in these areas as well. In addition, I was highly qualified (HQ) for history and social studies teaching while in New Jersey.

Special Needs

Study Skills

In my many years of teaching Special Education students at the high school level, I have had numerous occasions to prepare students for the ASVAB and HSPT testing. I have experience administering the tests, have been involved in feedback on design panels in NJ, and have proctored these exams since they were first initiated. I have worked with private clients to tutor in this area as well. I have used training manuals repeatedly with my classes of students and with tutees.

Poor study skills are endemic with AD/ADHD students and with many others identified as "at risk" students. Consequently, I have had many years teaching study skills in an attempt to ameliorate their skill deficits.

World History

As a special education teacher, I have taught world history many times since the 1960's. As a Masters level student, and as a doctoral student, I have kept up to date on curricular additions and methods of teaching world history. Personally I have an almost insatiable appetite for the history of the past and its relationship to the current history we are living through. This is an amazingly interesting time complete with individual ability to discover history through modern technology. I love it!
