Hello, I'm Jonathan! I recently completed a PhD in History at the University of California, Berkeley. Previously, I completed an MA in the Social Sciences at the University of Chicago and a BA in History at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where I graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. I am broadly interested in global and world history with a geographical focus on East Asia and Europe. I have been awarded numerous grants and awards to support my research and writing, including fellowships from the Fulbright Program, the Social Science Research Council, and Phi Beta Kappa.

I spent much of the previous decade teaching both at home and abroad. After completing my MA, I spent three years as an English as a Foreign Language teacher in Japan. At the University of California, Berkeley, I taught a range of courses covering the histories of Japan, Germany, and China and the topics of fascism, total war, and genocide. Recently, I have taught history courses at Santa Clara University and Stanford University. I have also helped dozens of high school students craft independent research projects and publish their work in prestigious journals.

I enjoy working with humanities, social sciences, and STEM students as they tackle the unique challenges posed by high school and college-level history courses. For high school students, I specialize in AP World and AP European history tutoring and test preparation. For college undergraduates, I specialize in subject-specific tutoring in East Asian and Modern European history; I am available to help you with course content, test preparation, and the crafting/editing of papers. I can also help you with foreign language acquisition (Japanese).

Aside from teaching history, my other great passion is music. I spend most of my free time writing and improvising with guitars, basses, synthesizers, and drums while tinkering with recording equipment. I would be delighted to teach you guitar, bass, or drums!

Drums

Drums

I have played drums for over twenty years and have appeared on numerous recordings--either as a session drummer, a band member, or an independent artist. I began drumming in the early 2000s in the New Jersey pop-punk music scene, at which point my band performed at Warped Tour. I later played in a number of experimental bands in western Massachusetts and New York, before going on to record four one-man-band albums. I am happy to teach any genre of drumming at any level.
Essay Writing

Essay Writing

I completed a Ph.D. in History with equal fields in Modern European History and East Asian-Japanese History. I have taught university courses that cover a wide range of themes, subjects, and geographies, including a writing and composition course. I have graded thousands of college-level essays and can teach you the elements of successful writing. I am here to help you design, write, and revise essays for your high school, college, and graduate-level coursework.
European History

European History

I completed a Ph.D. in Modern European History (with a focus on German history). I taught a course on the history of the Holocaust; designed a seminar on the comparative history of Germany and Japan; and tutored/mentored numerous students who have worked on research projects on the history of the Second World War.
Guitar

Guitar

I have been playing guitar for most of my life. In the past decade alone, I wrote, recorded, and released four instrumental albums that feature my guitar playing. I am prepared to teach beginner, intermediate, and advanced guitar playing across a range of styles (rock, punk, metal, alternative, prog, and so forth). My guitar lessons will help you master the technical aspects of guitar playing, while also helping you unlock your ability to express yourself with the instrument.
Japanese

Japanese

I completed a Ph.D. in Japanese history (and modern European history). During the course of my study, I completed four, fellowship-funded research trips to Japan to work in various libraries and archives. Prior to this, I spent three years teaching English as a Foreign Language in Nagoya, Japan.
