Most recently, I taught at Stanford University through their Continuing Studies program.

I like to have my students complete my online Digital Skills Assessment, which helps me see your strengths and challenges and helps me plan to make the most efficient use of our time together.

I've created a number of handouts and Powerpoint demonstrations, which I'm continually updating, to offer you the best instruction possible.

I've worked with a variety of ages and abilities - I even taught photography at a camp for the blind! I conduct evaluations in all my classes (although not required at most places where I teach), so I can continue to improve my teaching.

Photography instruction can either take place at my studio, your place, or remotely over the Internet. I look forward to helping you take your photography to the next level!

Photography

I began photographing my dog when I was 9 with a Kodak Brownie camera. From there, I graduated, with my dad’s instruction, to a Kodak Retina I (c. 1939), a light meter, and a darkroom. My experience is varied from shooting portraits, exploring the intimate world of macro photography, to teaching pinhole camera construction at a camp for the blind. My photographs have either won or placed in almost every photographic competition I’ve entered including most winning “Best of Show” at the Marin County Fair. My work has been utilized by colleges, a literary magazine, non-profit service organizations, corporations. Images from my travels to to Africa were the basis of an interactive multi-media CD-ROM used to promote an African vacation for an employee sales incentive reward program. And I still like taking pictures of my dog.

Best way to learn all parts of Lightroom

Reid T was great to work with on Lightroom especially setting up the fastest ways to import into a folder structure and collections. I found him very patient and diligent in getting my Lightroom properly set up which was all done over the internet and phone. I live in Oregon and he lives in California. I highly recommend Reid. He will not let you down.

The Perfect Photography Tutor

I feel incredibly lucky to have found Reid as my photography tutor. He is truly exceptional. Reid provides an abundance of well-organized written material to supplement our sessions, which has been invaluable to my learning. Before each lesson, he clearly outlines the topics we’ll cover and any prep I should do, which helps me feel focused and prepared. His teaching style is both accessible and thorough—he explains concepts in a way that really clicks, often using PowerPoint slides to reinforce ideas visually. He’s incredibly patient and always takes the time to answer my questions clearly, no matter how simple or complex. Beyond just photography techniques, Reid has helped me understand image processing, equipment choices, and how to bring creativity and intention into my work. His guidance has boosted both my skills and confidence behind the camera. I genuinely feel like I’ve found the perfect tutor.

Solved My Lightroom Crisis

Reid was a lifesaver when I ran into a major issue in Lightroom. I had trouble transferring photos from my computer's hard drive to two separate external drives, and I was convinced I had lost an entire set of images. Reid patiently worked through all three of my drives and helped me recover everything. On top of that, he shared several incredibly useful tips and tricks that have made my workflow much smoother. His expertise and calm guidance made a stressful situation so much easier to handle. I'm so grateful for his help!

Outstanding teacher of Lightroom

I have now been studying Lightroom with Reid for several weeks. He is articulate, friendly and obviously a highly experienced photographer, who understands the bells, whistles and nuance to Lightroom, a program that I at first found very intimidating. Reid has shared many of his own settings for Lightroom and has provided insight into how to use some of the program's intricacies to augment and improve photos that I never previously modified after snapping the shutter. I already notice a difference in the pictures that I took on a recent vacation to Iceland. He has my highest recommendation as a photography and Lightroom tutor Gary
