I have more than twenty years of experience teaching and tutoring English language arts, literature, and writing in both classroom and one-on-one settings. I hold a B.A. in Russian Language and Literature from the University of California, Berkeley, along with two master’s degrees in Humanities and Religious Studies and in Philosophy. I also earned a CELTA teaching certificate from Cambridge University. My teaching has taken place in secondary schools, university classrooms abroad, and private tutoring environments, where I have worked with students from about age ten through college level.

In tutoring sessions I focus on helping students understand how language works so they can become stronger readers, writers, and thinkers. I guide students through close reading of texts, careful analysis of ideas, and the step-by-step development of essays and written assignments. Rather than simply correcting mistakes, I help students learn how effective sentences and arguments are constructed.

My approach is structured, patient, and encouraging. I try to create a relaxed learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions while also being challenged to think clearly and communicate their ideas with confidence.

Approved Subjects

Anthropology

Anthropology

I am an Honors Program graduate of the College of the Redwoods, where I studied Cultural Anthropology and earned an A in the subject. In addition to my formal coursework, I have done extensive independent study in anthropology through sustained reading and self-directed learning. My two Master's degrees and extensive academic and scholarly background has given me a solid foundation in cultural analysis, human societies, and the study of belief, practice, and social organization. I bring both academic training and long-standing personal engagement to the subject.
Bible Studies

Bible Studies

With master’s degrees in Philosophy and in the Humanities/Religious Studies, and with many years of teaching and formation work, I have turned my lifelong love of the Bible to useful ends. I served as head of Adult Spiritual Formation for three parishes and have also taught Biblical Hebrew, which has given me both practical and scholarly experience in helping students read scripture more deeply. My background in philosophy, theology, and comparative religion enables me to guide students through biblical texts with attention to language, historical context, and spiritual meaning.
Creative Writing

Creative Writing

As a published author in multiple magazines and journals, I bring both professional writing experience and many years of classroom teaching to my work with students. I have taught literature, writing, and composition at Classical Learning Resource Center for over 10 years, helping students grow in clarity, style, structure, and confidence. My background also includes master’s-level graduate work at Humboldt State University and CELTA certification, along with 30 years of experience teaching a wide range of subjects in English. I work with students not only on grammar and composition, but also on thoughtful reading, strong expression, and the development of an individual voice.
Religion

Religion

I hold two master’s degrees with a strong focus on religion, philosophy, and the humanities. My M.A. in Philosophy from San Francisco State University emphasized philosophy of religion, while my M.A. in Humanities and Religious Studies explored religion through the broader context of the liberal arts. I also earned a B.A. with highest honors from the University of California, Berkeley, where I studied Slavic Languages and Literatures with substantial engagement in religious and cultural studies. My academic background has given me broad and interdisciplinary expertise in religion, religious thought, and the humanities.
