Bio

Growing up in Korea I loved watching and listening to foreign TV shows and songs very much. Movies, dramas, animations, and even music videos; they were so attractive to me. The more I watched and listened the more I wanted to learn English so I could better understand what it was I was watching and hearing, to better know the culture. It was that passion that led me to become a teacher and the opportunity to meet my husband and now live in California with my family, every day teaching...

Are you like me? Do you like Korean TV shows or songs even though you can’t really speak Korean? Do you want to travel to Korea and meet the people? Perhaps one day even work there! I can be your guide on your journey to learning Korean and enjoying Korean culture. I’m looking forward to being your tutor and share the fun things that Korea has to offer: Shopping at Myungdong and Namdaemun market; Spending time looking around at Gwanghwamun Kyobo book center; the night time concerts of Indie rock bands in Shinchon and Hongdae, or visiting the great Gyungbok palace.

For some 40 years Seoul South Korea was my home until only recently. All my education from elementary to college has been completed in Korea. My Bachelor’s of Arts is Sangmyung University while my Master’s is from Yonsei University. I have completed short-term TESOL programs in Toronto, Canada and U.C. Riverside. I am a certified teacher in Korea teaching English in public high school for 17 years. While being a teacher I have done over 900 hours of professional development. With my extensive teaching past and experience learning new languages myself, I know what is necessary and useful to students when they learn foreign languages. In addition to knowing “causal” every day Korean, I am well versed in formal business writing and have an exceptional understanding about Chinese character based Korean words and how to properly use them.

Kind, Organized, & Thoughtful Teacher

I'm SO happy I started working with Kay! My understanding, pronunciation, and progress learning Korean has skyrocketed since we started meeting weekly 6 months ago. She's incredibly organized, always preparing a mix of review of older vocabulary and concepts alongside new words and grammar points, as well as preparing different types of exercises: reading, listening, speaking, conjugating. That said, she's flexible, too, allowing time for all my random questions (from Duolingo, from K-dramas, from my TTMIK textbooks) and space to deviate from our planned lesson when necessary. Most importantly, she brings a lot of warmth and energy to our lessons; I always walk away from our sessions feeling encouraged and supported, which has been key for me navigating the hurdles and other challenges that learning a new language brings. I can't recommend Kay enough!

Excellent, knowledgeable tutor

Kay is able to customize the lesson to accommodate individual pace an to think outside of a systemized, oone-size-fits-all box. This is key for my highly motivated, hard working student.

Kay is great!

Kay is a very patient tutor that accommodates for all learning styles and experiences. She incorporates little facts she knows about my life into examples to practice things like grammar in an engaging manner. She accommodates for last minute changes to the schedule and her lessons and after-lesson review are varied, thorough, and clear. I’m glad to have her as a tutor!

Great tutor!

I have been taking lessons with Kay for months now and it has given me more confidence in my speaking abilities. I am Korean American and while I can understand Korean spoken to me, it is more difficult for me to speak it back using correct grammar and sentence structure. Kay always prepares specific topics for our lessons and lately has been helping me become familiar with common phrases that I will need when I visit Korea this summer. I definitely enjoy having Kay as my tutor and would recommend her to anyone else wanting to learn Korean.

Kay always comes to the session well-prepared and tailors the lesson to meet your individual needs/goals. She explains grammar points well and seeks your input for how to better help you with learning the language. I’ve really enjoyed our sessions!

Kay is a wonderful tutor.

Kay is a wonderful tutor. I highly recommend her. She plans and tailors her lessons to her students’ needs based on their past performance and goals. She even creates examples with the students’ interests in mind. Additionally, it is clear she has a deep wealth of knowledge regarding the language and explains the etymology of words making them easier to approach. She reinforces learning vocab and grammar through listening, talking, and writing to really cement concepts.

Kind and Helpful Teacher

Kay is a wonderful teacher for the Korean language. Her style of teaching is very good in several ways: (1) She prepares for the lessons. It is always clear that she puts thought and effort into the lesson plan. (2) She adjusts her teaching style and pace to fit for the student's needs. (3) She is good at balancing new material with review of old material. (4) Most of all she really takes pride in seeing her students grow and progress in their speaking skills. I would strongly recommend teacher Kay for anyone that wants to start or improve their Korean. She will be of great help.
