Hello! Thank you for your interest in my profile. My name is Jessica, and I'm an experienced tutor who recently completed my PhD in Political Science. I work in survey research and data analytics, and I enjoy tutoring outside of work because it's so rewarding to work with students.
I have expertise in any verbal subject, including ESL, reading (comprehension, analysis; all levels), writing (creative, persuasive, expository, etc; all levels), GRE Verbal or Writing, SAT Verbal or Writing, vocabulary, and grammar. I'm also qualified to tutor social studies, including AP Government. I've worked with elementary-aged children to adults.
I have taught two classes online. I’ve also tutored online, and been tutored online. It’s a different ballgame from in-person. I understand what both student and tutor need to be successful. For example, as a professor of an online college course on Congress, I received evaluations that the course was engaging and well-designed for an online format.
I have a proven track record of helping students exceed their goals. While teaching ESL to adults abroad, I was repeatedly told that I was the most professional instructor the Department had had in recent memory, and all of my forty-four students felt more confident using English. Similarly, as a tutor with the Community College Foundation, all of my students exceeded their goals (as defined by standardized assessments).
My teaching philosophy is simple: get to know the student - her strengths, challenges, and goals. Present the material in ways that appeal to her strengths. Along the way, lead by asking questions and by example. Recognize achievements and progress.

I've tutored Language Arts to students of varying ages for over two years. Especially when working with ESL students and junior high students, this included significant work on grammar. I've used many resources (worksheets, websites, games, practice essays) to strengthen students' grammar skills.

I have proofread and corrected many essays as a both a tutor (4 years all together) and Teaching Assistant, and know what teachers are looking for.

Approaches your needs in a thorough and professional manner

Jessica has a comfortable approach to understanding what I need. We've met just once but the feeling I get is that she custom tailors her lessons to the student and doesn't just use her own way of teaching that students would have to adapt to. My learning style is very specific and she definitely understands that.
