I saw in my first student teaching position that elementary school teachers don't know math so well, typically being good with language arts or a combination of all the subjects. Though I originally got my teaching credential in elementary education, that student teaching experience made me decide to teach math, which I did for most of my 26 years teaching.
I taught math to 7th graders for ten years and high school for the last part. I typically taught kids who had trouble getting it. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
