As a California Certified Christian Teacher of 10 years, I have enjoyed helping my students achieve their academic goals in the diverse settings of LAUSD and several charter schools. Tutoring has also been a large part of my expertise. In my sessions, we keep stress at a minimum and still maintain a commitment to excellence! I believe that learning can be fun even though hard work is involved. All of my students show a marked improvement in performance with consistent effort. Being part of a student's support system is motivational, especially when progress is made.
I tutor most elementary, middle school and high school subjects. This includes math through pre-calculus, English and the sciences. I also tutor for Standardized Test Prep - GED, GRE, SAT, ISEE, CBEST, ESL/TOEFL.
My techniques and strategies are highly focused and flexible, tailored to an individual's needs and ability. I know that every student is capable of learning with the appropriate foundation and skills. We target a weakness and strengthen it. Then, we fill in gaps of missed information and always push forward to build confidence/self esteem.

Algebra 1

l currently teach/tutor math and English students in middle school and high school.
CBEST

CBEST

I successfully completed my CBEST certification and have tutored other candidates for the exam. The math section presents challenges, but I have helped others pass this part of the exam. With a consistent study schedule and great review materials, most teachers can achieve a passing score.
Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a BS in Chemistry and am state certified with my CBEST Exam. I have taught in several school districts, including Los Angeles Unified Schools for more than 10 years. Additionally, I have tutoring experience with the programs "No Child Left Behind" and "Beyond the Bell", for more than 5 years. This includes all aspects of reading and math K-8. Phonics, spelling, comprehension and writing skills are just a few of the areas I covered with specialized tutorial plans for elementary and middle school students.
GED

GED

I have assisted many students with the GED and HiSet Exams in a local Adult School Program and as a private tutor with library referrals. We have used online GED/HiSet materials and standardized review books from major publishers. The students that are successful have a disciplined study schedule and focus intently on each subject area. Comprehending the recommended study materials and working lots of practice problems usually yields a passing score, if the exam is taken immediately after preparation. I also fill in "foundational knowledge gaps" so that the material can be understood. Depending on a student's background and the length of time without academics, GED preparation may take more time. When this is the case, diagnostic assessments are used for placement and the course of study is more than a review of concepts. However, I have observed that most serious and determined students can be successful with assistance.
Phonics

Phonics

I have tutored phonics for more than 8 years in after school programs with LAUSD and as a private tutor. I have used tutorial programs from Beka to Raz Kids for phonics assistance. Drills for skills work best using Dolch 220 sight words and focused attention on Vowels sounds, Consonant blends including dipthongs, digraphs, and special sounds. Most phonics students need the repetition of flash cards and visual supplements as a memory aid. I have helped many non readers learn to read and firmly believe that I am qualified to tutor phonics.
Special Needs

Special Needs

During the course of my employment with LAUSD I taught Special Education exclusively for one year with an Emergency Special Education Credential. I have written dozens of IEP protocols and worked closely with students of various designations. I have found that proper diagnosis, focused attention, and creative techniques work together for long term remedies that enable students to be mainstreamed and have good success. Students generally compensate for their issues when they have competent support and lots of practice in a specific area. A good tutor is part of the solution!
Study Skills

Study Skills

With more than 10 years of teaching/classroom experience, I have observed and learned what it takes to be a successful student. Study skills are of vital importance in academic achievement. I have trained my students during the semester in study skills. In general, we begin with proper materials and organizers; we analyze the need for study skills and clarify our objectives; we schedule personal study goals on our calendars, map a strategy and get rewards when goals are met. I usually made this a homeroom exercise with a few more details and a semester's commitment.

Patient, Understanding, and Supportive Tutor

Patricia is an amazing tutor—patient, kind, and very clear in her explanations. After just my first session with her, I passed my reading HiSET test with a high score. She creates a comfortable learning environment and really takes the time to make sure I understand. I’m so grateful for her guidance and highly recommend her!
