My name is Emelia, and I am currently pursuing a degree in liberal studies, after which I will earn my teaching credential at Sacramento State. My path toward becoming a teacher is driven by both personal experience and a genuine passion for literacy in education. Growing up in a family where reading and writing didn't come easily, my mother guided my siblings and me through patient, structured instruction that transformed my learning experience and rooted in me a love of teaching. For three years in my high school career, I privately tutored two students who struggled in reading comprehension and helped them to develop strong literacy skills. Alongside my college studies, I volunteer regularly in a fourth and fifth-grade special needs classroom, where I have developed a real-world understanding of what effective literacy instruction looks like in practice. I have also pursued my own research through extensive reading on teaching methods, which deepened my belief that there is a meaningful difference between knowing a subject and knowing how to teach it.

My tutoring approach is built on the time-tested strategies that have consistently proven effective: patience, repetition, and personalised strategies. Rather than following the latest experimental methods, I focus on the foundational techniques that have helped countless learners build real, lasting skills. Each session is individualized, beginning with an assessment of the student’s current reading level and moving through targeted exercises such as breaking down words, working through sentences and paragraphs, and identifying a path forward for continued growth. I am here to offer the focused, compassionate support that makes a lasting difference.
