Bio

Born and raised in Spain, I attended the Spanish Merchant Marine Academy, where I obtained undergraduate and graduate degrees. Once I settled in U.S.A., I studied undergraduate philosophy at UCLA and graduate at UC Berkeley, and also worked in the Information Technology field at Pac Tel and Bell Labs, among others.

Being bilingual (English/Spanish) has been a great help to enhance my competence in both languages. It has been much more than just having had the opportunity to practice them. I have graduate degrees in Spanish (Madrid) and English (Cal) and am certified to tutor in both languages. Additionally, all my submitted articles for publication reached such end.

My knowledge of English Grammar reflects the benefit of the elaborate process that anyone learning English academically as a second language must pass through. Before studying in American institutions (UCLA and UC Berkeley), I studied English for three years in the Spanish Merchant Marine Academy, given that English is the internationally accepted language among merchant mariners all over the world. Once I settled down in the U.S., I studied and used English at the college level for many years. Philosophy being my chosen field, writing was a constant task. By the time I obtained my M.A. at UC Berkeley, I felt it had been worth every minute of study and writing I devoted to it. Not only did I pour time and effort into it, but I did it most enthusiastically, for my acquired knowledge of English leads the list of academic rewards I value.

Besides having been an avid reader since my early school years in Spain, my studies of philosophy at both undergraduate and graduate levels (UCLA and Cal, respectively) have contributed very effectively to my reading concentration and comprehension of the material. Philosophy is, above all, critical. This requires a thorough comprehension of the material being criticized. Else, the reader will quickly find a more appealing alternative.

The fact that I was educated (at the graduate level) both in Europe (Spain) and in the U.S.A. has contributed enormously to my acquisition of a very diverse vocabulary. Additionally, my studies in this country (UCLA and Cal) were in the humanities in general and philosophy in particular. It meant many years of analysis and writing. Today, I feel most comfortable when engaged in linguistic immersion, whether in English or Spanish.

I believe that my personal studying style has played a key role in my studies at the undergraduate and graduate levels in more than one field and country. I find that teaching the student to differentiate between the essential material and the supporting one often suffices to accomplish a lot more with a lot less effort. Fortunately, such ability can be learned through guidance and repetition. Once acquired, it becomes a most natural, and powerful, part of the student's arsenal.

Born and raised in Spain, I soon started to study English in the Merchant Marine Academy (English is the international maritime language). After obtaining my Master in Spain, I sailed in American companies. Once I settled in Southern California, I earned my B.A. in philosophy from UCLA and my M.A. in the same field from Cal. I have also taught Spanish for many years, and still do, as well as English to foreign students. Additionally, I have never submitted an article in English to a newspaper than wasn't published. Languages are my thing!

In addition to my graduate studies in philosophy (writing, writing, and more writing), any pieces I've sent to newspapers have been published. Being able to write in more than one language has given me the opportunity to appreciate how powerful the English language is in its written form. Not only I do it, but I love it ... as well.

Wonderful experience, wonderful tutor!

I just took my first session from Wyzant today. With Luis! To better my Spanish. I was pleasantly surprised. He was on time. Super patient and accommodating to my pace and style. His words were articulate as he let the conversation flow between us. No Rosetta Stone or Duolingo could replace the in-person energy, corrections, conversing and overall flow of engaging in person with someone who knows the language and is a great teacher. Luis gave me personalized attention, increased my motivation to learn more Spanish, was kind in his words and very encouraging. It felt like the old days of learning and teaching... just awesome!
