Don't stress. I can help. I have years of education and experience in teaching: California teacher credentials from pre-K thru 12th grade, ELA, English Comp, and SPED. With a Master’s in Writing and a JD,, I taught college English Comp and Law.

I’m often asked about my teaching methods. First and foremost, I teach to my student’s personal interests and unique ways of learning. We're all different; I respect those differences. That’s why I spend time in our initial session getting to know my student–-what they like, what they don’t like–and also get a baseline of where they’re currently functioning in their English/ELA class. Since I view English as a whole--not as its separate parts of reading, writing, grammar and punctuation, my teaching reflects my philosophy. My first sessions are an interactive “lecture” about good writing in general and then about essays in particular from personal and persuasive to literature analysis (CER). I go as fast or as slow as my student needs to progress with proficiency, and to gain that proficiency, I assign a writing for homework every week to be presented in the following lesson when we talk about how to improve their writing. I diagnose their trouble areas in grammar and punctuation and provide targeted instruction as issues present.

Literature analysis requires reading and knowing the standard vocabulary for that genre, so I draw on classic literature at grade level and above for those assignments. Their reading in school can also be incorporated in my assignments where I can provide homework support as well.

Lastly, I can tutor law for law school, related subjects, and state bars, but only for ND students like myself:)

I am a retired credentialed special education teacher for all grade levels and even for college and grad school students. My expertise is in reading and writing but particularly for dyslexic, ASD and ADD/ADHD learners. I have learning “disabilities” myself, and that is why I was drawn to teaching years ago. Although trained in Lindamood and OG, I do not rely on just one method nor adhere to the deficit model of teaching where the goal is to have the student be like other students. My personalized individualized instruction actually helps my students succeed their own way. Learning how to learn is half the battle. So I would like to encourage you and your student to join me for online tutoring like many others with “special needs” have done, and if the first lesson is not successful, I won’t bill you. If you’re hesitant about online learning, please know that young people are pre-wired for using computers and the Internet. I’m sure yours will enjoy that platform for learning as well. It’s safe, and the way of the world today anyway, so a good skill to have for the future. So, I thank you for giving this option serious consideration, and I hope you agree to at least try it once. Remember the “Good Fit Guarantee” means you don’t pay if you’re not happy, but I’m sure you will be.

I am also currently teaching remotely for Writing Lab support for several colleges.
