About Sam

Hello everyone!

My name is Sam. My philosophy on tutoring is simple, I work very hard behind the scenes to make my sessions as effective as possible for my students. Every student's learning curve, strengths, weaknesses and learning styles are different. As such, my approach to each student is unique. I am passionate about helping students reach their academic goals and I take pride in my role as their tutor and also as a mentor. I received my undergraduate training in Economics and Mathematics from the University of California, Riverside. In the 2016-2017 school year, I completed my Master's of Arts in Economics at the University of Texas at Austin. In the Fall of 2017 I will embark on my PhD in Economics at the University of California, Riverside. I am looking to find a few serious students to tutor this academic school year.

I believe that time management is an essential skill that every successful student must deal with throughout their academic careers. Therefore, in addition to teaching students subjects x, y or z, I also teach them some simple yet effective techniques that will help them make the most of their time.

During the past 6 years I have been fortunate enough to tutor students all over Southern California and Austin, TX ranging from elementary school to college. I have a passion for helping students reach their goals and more importantly realizing their true potential as an individual. I always tell my students, "you don’t have to be a genius to be a good student, but you must put in the work." After my time with students, I see that there is a general shift with their outlook towards school. They aren’t so intimidated by a particular subject, because math, economics, statistics, trigonometry and so on can be very fun and rewarding when taught properly and with enthusiasm.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions you have. I make it a point to respond very quickly as I value your time. I look forward to meeting you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I have tutored The ACT math to countless students in the past. In short, it is a 60 minute, 60 question section with a calculator, covering: Pre-algebra, Algebra, Coordinate Geometry, Plane Geometry and
Trigonometry.

Initially, I start with a diagnostic test for my students followed by a very thorough error analysis of their missed questions. All of which will be categorized into one of the three topics above and dealt with in isolated scenarios with high repetition.

Student's must become very familiar with the test and the timing of it, which can be a constraint for many. This is done with a high frequency of sessions.

Homework should be expected and is very crucial to the process. Additionally. for any standardized test, there are certain tricks that students can employ even when they aren't sure what the correct answer is to increase their chances of guessing correctly.

Typically I recommend 3 sessions per week and a minimum of 2 months prep time.

Calculus

I recommend all students to do a thorough review 2-3 weeks BEFORE they start a calculus course. I have created a great 'crash course' packet that students can complete to ensure they are ready to digest the calculus topics from day 1 in class without having to feel overwhelmed with weaknesses in their non-calculus related training. I have taken about 15 calculus based courses as a student and I can truly say I love the subject! It's like learning a new language, which can be frustrating initially. But once you establish fluency it's very rewarding.

Every student that has worked with me on a long term basis has passed the AP Calculus exam.

Economics

I received my undergraduate training in Math and Economics at UC Riverside. I received my Master's in Economics at the University of Texas at Austin. I am about to begin my PhD in Economics this Fall at UC Riverside. I have a passion for Economics and I love to convey that to my students.

Soccer

Soccer is my passion in life. I played club soccer between the ages of 6-18 years old. I played for the Irvine Strikers, which is consistently one of the best clubs in the nation. Our team was in the Premier bracket, the highest bracket possible.

In high school I was the captain of the freshman/sophomore team my freshman year. My sophomore year I was one of 3 sophomores to make Varsity, I held a starting position that year and I received 'Honorable Mention' at the end of the season. My junior and senior years I was the captain of the Varsity team.

Collegiately, I played at Irvine Valley College, we finished 2nd place in league.

I continue to play twice a week competitively.

Trigonometry

Trigonometry is often the most confusing subject for many students I've encountered simply because they don't make the connection that we are now dealing with lengths and angles. I have proven techniques that help my students truly understand the unit circle, graphs of trig functions and trig identities. I don't teach them to just memorize but rather to understand why these relationships and equations exist.

Sam is an excellent tutor!

Specifically, I am very excited with Sam's level of math tutoring. Most math teachers and tutors do not really understand math enough to teach it at the middle or high school level. They do not know the levels of abstraction and strategies required to solve different classes of math problems. Sam has good math education, and excellent understanding of the process of solving math problems, and is a
