Hi, I'm Dorothea — a Deaf native signer with over 30 years of experience using and teaching American Sign Language (ASL). I began signing at age 5 and have studied ASL at Laney College, the Louisiana School for the Deaf, and Southern University A&M, where I also served as a Teaching Assistant. My deep roots in the Deaf community and professional background as a Vocational Counselor for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing allow me to bring both cultural understanding and real-world communication strategies into every lesson.
I provide ASL tutoring to learners of all ages—children, teens, college students, and adults—offering one-on-one and group sessions via Zoom. I support students studying ASL in school, families learning to communicate with Deaf loved ones, and beginners simply curious about the language. My teaching style is warm, respectful, and interactive. I use games, storytelling, role play, and visual aids to make learning fun and accessible. I cover fingerspelling, vocabulary, grammar, classifiers, non-manual markers, and Deaf culture in every lesson, tailored to each student's pace and goals.
Whether you need help with ASL homework, test prep, conversational practice, or a strong foundation in the language, I’m here to help you build confidence and connect more deeply through sign. I love seeing my students grow in their skills and cultural understanding, and I’d be honored to be part of your ASL journey.
